๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Phillips head screwdriver
- โ Garden hose with adjustable nozzle
- โ Soft-bristled brush
- โ Fin comb tool
- โ Plastic sheeting or trash bags
- โ Painter's tape
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Foaming air conditioner coil cleaner
- โ Microfiber towels
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Always unplug the air conditioner from the wall outlet before touching any screws or internal components.
- โข Completely seal the electrical control box and fan motor in plastic before spraying any water or cleaner.
- โข Never use a high-pressure washer or direct high-pressure spray onto the delicate aluminum coil fins.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (7 Steps)
Unplug and Relocate Unit
Disconnect the air conditioner power cord from the wall outlet completely. Carefully lift the unit out of the window frame and place it onto a stable outdoor workbench, sawhorses, or a clean patch of grass near a garden hose.
- โข Power cord free and coiled loosely
- โข Air conditioner resting flat on a stable outdoor elevated surface
- โข Attempting to clean the condenser coils while the unit remains mounted in the window
Remove Front Grille and Outer Metal Shroud
Pop off the plastic front panel and pull out the mesh air filter. Locate and remove all perimeter screws securing the outer metal cabinet to the base pan and internal frame, then slide the metal shroud straight up and off.
- โข Mesh filter and front bezel set aside
- โข Entire metal outer casing lifted off, exposing both sets of coils and the fan motor
- โข Yanking the cover without removing hidden bottom or side screws
Mask Electrical Controls and Fan Motor
Wrap the electronic control box, digital display wiring, and the central fan motor tightly with plastic bags or sheeting. Secure the edges firmly using painter's tape to prevent any moisture ingress during cleaning.
- โข Control board enclosure completely sealed in watertight plastic
- โข Fan motor body fully covered with taped plastic wrap
- โข Leaving gaps around wires entering the control box where water can seep in
Comb Fins and Dry Brush Debris
Use a soft-bristled brush to gently sweep away loose leaves, pet hair, and surface dirt from the evaporator and condenser coils. If any aluminum fins are bent or crushed, align the matching tooth size of a fin comb and gently stroke vertically to straighten them.
- โข Fins are parallel and straight with no flat crushed spots
- โข Surface matting of dust and lint removed from coil faces
- โข Dragging fin combs horizontally across the fins, which bends entire rows flat
Apply Foaming Coil Cleaner
Shake the foaming coil cleaner can vigorously and spray a thick, even layer over the front evaporator and rear condenser coils. Ensure the foam penetrates deep into the spaces between the fins, then let it dwell for 10 to 15 minutes to dissolve grime.
- โข Both front and rear coil assemblies fully enveloped in dense white foam
- โข Foam actively breaking down and dripping dirt into the base pan
- โข Rinsing the foam off immediately without letting the chemicals break down oils and sludge
Rinse Coils and Flush Base Pan
Set your hose nozzle to a gentle shower or flat spray pattern and rinse the coils thoroughly from top to bottom. Flush the bottom metal pan, directing water toward the rear drain port to clear out all loosened sludge, algae, and foam residue.
- โข Clean, shiny aluminum fins with no residual foam
- โข Clear water flowing freely out of the rear drain hole of the pan
- โข Using a high-pressure jet stream that instantly flattens aluminum fins
Dry, Unmask, and Reassemble
Wipe down the base pan with microfiber towels and let the unit air dry for 30 minutes. Remove all plastic masking from the motor and electronics, slide the outer metal casing back over the frame, reinstall all screws, and clip the clean air filter and front panel back into place.
- โข Plastic wrap completely removed from electrical components
- โข Outer metal shroud aligned and securely screwed into the base pan
- โข Front grille and clean air filter snapped firmly in place
- โข Reassembling while the control compartment is still damp

Don’t have everything?
- No Fin comb tool? Plastic gift card or dull butter knife used very gently
- No Foaming air conditioner coil cleaner? Diluted dish soap in a spray bottle (let soak 20 mins)
