How to Frame a Load-Bearing Wall

๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Layout and Mark Plates
Place the bottom sole plate and top plate edge-to-edge on sawhorses. Pull your tape from the left edge and mark 16-inch on-center stud layouts across both plates simultaneously using a speed square. Scribe an 'X' to the right of each line to indicate stud placement.

Assemble Built-Up Structural Header
Sandwich a 1/2-inch plywood spacer between two pieces of 2x6 or 2x8 dimensional lumber cut to rough opening width plus 3 inches. Nail the assembly together using 16d nails in a staggered grid pattern every 12 inches from both sides.

- โข Omitting the plywood spacer leaving the header thinner than the wall depth

Construct King and Jack Stud Assemblies
Cut two jack (trimmer) studs to fit directly underneath the header elevation. Fasten each jack stud directly against a full-length king stud using 16d nails spaced 12 inches apart along the length.

- โข Top of the jack stud forms a flat, level bearing shoulder for the header
- โข Cutting jack studs unevenly, causing point loads to transfer crookedly

Nail Perimeter and Intermediate Studs
Lay out the top plate and sole plate flat on the floor separated by the stud length. Position all common studs and king/jack assemblies on layout marks, driving two 16d nails through the outer face of each plate into the end grain of each stud.
- โข Every stud sits flush with the outer edges of both top and bottom plates
- โข Two nail heads cleanly driven per stud connection without split wood
- โข Driving nails at an extreme angle that blows out the side of the stud
- โข Fastening studs off the layout line, resulting in inconsistent stud bays
Install Header and Cripple Studs
Seat the built-up header firmly onto the jack stud shoulders and nail through the adjacent king studs into the header ends. Measure, cut, and install top cripple studs at 16-inch on-center layout between the header top and the top plate.
- โข Header rests with 100% surface contact against the top of both jack studs
- โข Cripple studs maintain the identical 16-inch center layout from the main wall
- โข Leaving a gap between header underside and jack stud top
- โข Misaligning cripple studs so sheet goods cannot be nailed on layout above openings
Square Frame and Install Double Top Plate
Measure diagonal corner-to-corner distances and shift the frame until both diagonal measurements match exactly. Nail a second top plate overlapping the lower top plate, offsetting joints by at least 24 inches to lock the structural frame together.
- โข Opposing corner diagonal measurements are identical to within 1/16 inch
- โข Upper top plate overlaps lower joints by 24+ inches and aligns flush
- โข Aligning seams of the upper and lower top plates in the exact same spot
- โข Skipping diagonal measurement resulting in a parallelogram-shaped wall
