โš ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings

๐Ÿ“‹ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)

1

Anchor Sill Plates to Foundation

Roll out sill gasket foam along the concrete foundation perimeter to create a capillary break. Drill holes in pressure-treated 2x6 lumber matching foundation anchor bolt locations. Slide boards over bolts and torque down heavy-duty washers and nuts until flush.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Continuous white/blue foam visible beneath treated plate
  • โ€ข Washers compressed tight to timber on every bolt
  • โ€ข Chalk line reveals straight alignment along slab edge
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Forgetting sill gasket beneath treated wood
  • โ€ข Overtightening nuts and splitting the wood
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Concrete anchor dust contains crystalline silica; wear an N95 respirator when drilling foundation concrete.
2

Assemble and Raise Wall Frames

Layout top and sole plates together, marking stud locations every 16 inches on center. Lay studs between plates on the subfloor deck and drive two 16d nails per stud connection. Lift the wall assembly upright, align the bottom plate with your chalk line, and nail temporary diagonal 2x4 braces to secure it.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Vertical studs aligned plumb at 16-inch on-center spacing
  • โ€ข Diagonal 2x4 kickers anchored firmly to subfloor deck
  • โ€ข Top and bottom plates flush with outer floor boundary
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Failing to mark stud layout on both plates simultaneously
  • โ€ข Leaving wall unbraced while standing next section
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Never lift heavy framed walls alone; use at least two people and maintain firm foot grip on the subfloor.
3

Sheathe Exterior Walls with OSB

Fasten 7/16-inch OSB panels vertically or horizontally across the exterior studs with 8d ring-shank nails. Space nails 6 inches apart on panel edges and 12 inches apart along intermediate field studs. Leave a 1/8-inch expansion gap between adjacent panel edges to prevent buckling from humidity.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Panels fully cover wall frame with staggered horizontal seams
  • โ€ข Nail heads flush with surface without piercing the outer veneer
  • โ€ข Visible 1/8-inch coin-width gaps between panel edges
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Butting OSB sheets tight against each other with zero gap
  • โ€ข Over-driving nails deep through the outer strand layer
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Watch nailer exhaust and kickback when fastening sheathing near panel corners.
4

Set and Brace Roof Trusses

Lift engineered trusses onto the double top plates using mechanical hoists or team lifts according to structural plans. Plumb each truss and secure it to the top plate using metal hurricane ties and specified structural screws. Nail continuous lateral bracing across truss webs to lock the roof structure in plane.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Truss peaks form a straight, level horizontal ridge line
  • โ€ข Metal hurricane ties seated flush and fully nailed at top plates
  • โ€ข Continuous 2x4 lateral bracing running perpendicular across truss chords
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Omitting web/lateral bracing before roof sheathing
  • โ€ข Toe-nailing top plates without approved hurricane clips
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Tie off to certified roof anchor points immediately upon stepping onto upper top plates or scaffolding.
5

Install Weather-Resistant Barrier and Flashing

Wrap the exterior sheathing with housewrap, starting from the bottom of the wall and working upward with a 6-inch horizontal overlap. Fasten with plastic-capped cap nails or staples every 12 to 18 inches. Seal all horizontal and vertical seams tightly using manufacturer-approved acrylic seam tape.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Smooth, unwrinkled housewrap covering all exterior wood sheathing
  • โ€ข Upper courses overlapping lower courses in shingle fashion
  • โ€ข All seams completely covered with red or white building tape
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Reverse-lapping housewrap so water can funnel behind sheets
  • โ€ข Leaving seams un-taped or using standard duct tape
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Wear cut-resistant gloves when repeatedly slicing housewrap and adhesive membranes with utility knives.
6

Rough-In Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing

Bore holes through the center of studs for electrical Romex cables, PEX water lines, and DWV drain pipes. Pull wiring to outlet and switch boxes, leaving 8 inches of free conductor inside each box. Install steel nail plates on the face of every framing member where pipes or wires pass within 1-1/4 inches of the stud edge.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Wires and pipes run dead-center through stud depth
  • โ€ข Metal anti-puncture nail plates installed on stud faces over all bore holes
  • โ€ข Electrical boxes rigidly attached and protruding 1/2 inch past stud face for drywall
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Drilling holes too close to the front edge of the stud without nail plates
  • โ€ข Overfilling bored holes with too many Romex cables
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Check stud hole size charts: never notch or bore more than 40-60% of a structural stud's total width.
