How to Build a Small Log Cabin

Clear and Level Foundation Footings
Clear the build site of organic topsoil down to stable subsoil or rock. Position four level foundation stones or concrete pier blocks at the corners, verifying square across the diagonals. Check that all corner pads are level with each other across the entire span.

Peel and Prepare Sill Logs

Scribe and Cut Corner Notches
Lay the cross logs atop the sill logs and stabilize with temporary wedges. Set the log scriber to match the contour of the lower log and trace the profile onto the upper log end. Carve out the saddle notch with chainsaw cuts, cleaning up the bowl with an adze until the log drops tightly into place.

Stack Wall Logs and Secure Openings

Cut rough door and window openings once the desired header height is reached, bracing openings with temporary vertical cleats.

Frame Roof Structure and Install Ridge Pole
Notch and lift a stout ridge pole log onto the gable end support logs. Cut birdsmouth notches into rafter poles and secure them from ridge pole to top wall logs at regular 24-inch intervals. Sheathe the rafters with rough-sawn boards, roll out roofing underlayment, and screw down metal roof panels.

Clean dust and debris from all horizontal log seams. Pack larger gaps with backing rod or mineral wool insulation, then apply a smooth bead of flexible synthetic log chinking along every joint. Tool the sealant with a damp foam trowel to shed water outward.
