Clear Ground and Set Stone Footings
Clear all organic topsoil down to hard mineral earth across the cabin footprint. Dig four shallow corner pits and pack them with large, flat-topped fieldstones to elevate the wood off damp soil. Lay straight test poles across the stones and check level in all four directions, adding shims or digging deeper until flat.

Hew a flat 3-to-4-inch bottom face along both base logs so they sit solidly on the foundation stones without rolling. Place the first two parallel sill logs onto the corner stones.

Roll the top log over and chop out the marked semi-circular saddle notch using relief cuts and a sharp axe or gouge chisel.
