How to Make a DIY Underwater Viewer

📋 Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Mark and Cut the Bucket Base
Draw a cutting line roughly 1 to 2 inches inside the bottom rim of your plastic bucket using a marker. Carefully pierce the line with a utility knife and cut away the center of the base, leaving a sturdy outer lip to support the viewing window.
- • A circular opening cut into the bucket base with a 1-inch supporting lip remaining.
- • Cutting off the entire bottom sidewall so there is no flange left to glue the window to.
Smooth the Cut Edge
Rub medium-grit sandpaper firmly along the cut plastic rim both inside and outside the bucket. Remove all sharp plastic burrs to ensure a flush, safe mounting surface for the transparent window.
- • Smooth, matte plastic edge with no sharp curls or loose shavings.
- • Leaving rough burrs that prevent the clear window from seating flat.
Size and Cut the Clear Viewing Window
Place your clear acrylic or heavy vinyl sheet over the cut bottom and trace a circle matching the bucket's inner base diameter. Cut out the clear plastic disc using heavy-duty scissors or an acrylic scoring tool.
- • A clear circular disc that sits flat across the inner rim of the bucket base.
- • Cutting the disc smaller than the hole, leaving gaps around the perimeter.
Apply Sealant and Mount the Window
Apply a continuous, thick bead of 100% waterproof silicone sealant along the inside rim of the bucket base. Press the clear disc firmly onto the silicone, then secure the exterior seam with overlapping strips of waterproof duct tape.
- • Solid, bubble-free silicone line visible between the clear disc and bucket lip, sealed tightly with tape on the outside.
- • Leaving gaps in the silicone bead where water can penetrate.
Submerge Lens and View Through Turbid Water
Lower the bucket upright into the muddy water until the clear bottom is submerged 2 to 4 inches below the surface. Look directly down through the open top of the bucket to view beneath the muddy surface without reflections or surface ripples.
