How to Install a Nest Thermostat

π Step-by-Step Guide (7 Steps)
Shut Off Power to HVAC System
Locate your home circuit breaker panel and switch off the breaker labeled 'Furnace', 'Air Conditioner', or 'HVAC'. Additionally, flip the toggle switch located on or near the indoor furnace unit to the OFF position. Check the old thermostat display to verify it has powered down completely.

Remove Old Faceplate and Photograph Wiring
Pull the existing thermostat faceplate straight off its wall sub-base. Take a clear, well-lit photo of the wire terminals showing every wire color connected to its corresponding letter label (e.g., R, W, Y, G, C). Pay attention to any jumper wires between terminals.

Label and Disconnect Wires
Apply matching wire label stickers onto each wire based on the terminal letter it was connected to, not its sheath color. Loosen each terminal screw with a small screwdriver and pull the wires free. Wrap the wire bundle around a pencil so it cannot slip backward into the wall cavity, then unscrew and remove the old baseplate.

Mount Nest Base and Trim Plate
Thread the labeled wire bundle through the center opening of the Nest trim plate (if using) and the Nest base. Align the base against the wall and use the integrated bubble level to ensure it sits perfectly straight. Fasten the base securely to the wall using the provided mounting screws into drywall anchors or studs.

Insert Wires into Nest Terminals
Press down the terminal push-button on the Nest base with your thumb and slide each labeled wire into its matching port (R to R, W to W1, Y to Y1, G to G, C to C). Release the button and confirm the terminal button stays depressed, indicating a secure grip. Push any excess wire length gently back into the wall opening so the base interior is clear.

Attach Display and Restore Power
Align the Nest display unit over the base with the Nest logo right-side up. Press the display firmly onto the base until you feel and hear an audible click. Go back to your breaker panel and furnace toggle switch, and turn all HVAC power back ON.

Complete Setup and Test Equipment
Follow the on-screen display prompts or open the Google Home / Nest app to connect to Wi-Fi and configure your heating and cooling equipment types. Once configured, lower the temperature below room temp to test Cool mode, then raise it above room temp to test Heat mode, verifying airflow from vents in each mode.
