📋 Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Chisel and Undercut Damaged Edges
Place the cold chisel along the fractured edge angled slightly outward and strike firmly with the drilling hammer. Break away all crumbling, cracked, or loose concrete until you reach solid, sound substrate. Create an undercut or vertical edge (an inverted V-shape) so the patch can lock mechanically into the cavity.
- • Cavity walls are vertical or slightly undercut with no feathered, shallow edges remaining.
- • No loose flakes or crumbling chunks wiggle when tapped.
- • Leaving a V-groove with sloping edges that will force the patch pop out under load.
- • Chiseling too gently and leaving unstable fractured concrete underneath.
Clean Dust and Loose Particles
Scrub the entire cavity aggressively using a stiff wire brush to dislodge micro-dust and broken aggregate. Vacuum all pulverized powder and debris out of the void and clean an extra 6 inches around the perimeter. Wipe the area to ensure zero loose grit remains.
- • Cavity floor shows clean, textured aggregate with zero powdery white dust films.
- • Dry concrete surface around the repair zone is completely clear of grit.
- • Blowing dust with breath or air compressor without vacuuming, leaving a fine dust barrier.
- • Failing to wire-brush deep inside corners and porous pockets.
Dampen Surface and Apply Bonding Adhesive
Mist the clean cavity lightly with water using a spray bottle until the surface is damp but has no standing puddles (Saturated Surface Dry). Brush a thin, even coat of concrete bonding adhesive onto the floor and sidewalls of the cavity. Allow the bonding agent to become tacky according to the product directions.
- • Concrete looks dark and damp with a milky or glossy, tacky layer of adhesive covering every exposed surface.
- • Zero pooled water resting in low spots.
- • Pouring patch compound over a dry, thirsty concrete base that sucks moisture out of the fresh mix.
- • Letting bonding adhesive dry to a slick, hard plastic film before placing the patch.
Pack and Press Patching Compound
Scoop the pre-mixed or prepared vinyl patch compound onto your margin trowel and press it firmly into the cavity bottom and corners. Force the material into all voids with the flat edge of the trowel to eliminate air pockets. Overfill the cavity slightly past the surrounding surface plane.
- • Cavity is completely filled with wet mortar bulging roughly 1/8-inch above the surrounding slab.
- • No hollow air bubbles or uncompressed voids visible around the edges.
- • Bridging over deep gaps by smoothing only the top surface.
- • Applying the patch in layers thicker than manufacturer guidelines without tamping.
Screed, Blend, and Finish the Surface
Hold the margin trowel flat against the adjacent existing concrete and drag it across the patch in a smooth sawing motion to screed off excess material. Feather the edges smoothly so the patch sits perfectly flush with the old slab. Lightly drag a dry stiff-bristled brush across the semi-firm patch to match the surrounding broom-finish texture.

- • Surface texture matches the roughness and sheen of the existing surrounding concrete.
- • Over-troweling, which pulls fine cement paste to the surface and causes cracking later.
