Clear and Feather the Damaged Edge
Scrape away all loose drywall paper, crumbling gypsum, and flaking existing texture around the damage using your putty knife. Sand the perimeter lightly with a 220-grit sanding sponge to taper the edge flat against the sound wall. Wipe away all residual white drywall dust with a slightly damp rag.
