How to Repair a Garden Hose

๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Locate and Mark the Damaged Area
Examine the hose around the leak to identify the full extent of internal cord fraying or punctures. Measure at least 1 inch past the damaged section on both sides to reach solid, undamaged rubber. Mark the cut points clearly with a grease pencil or chalk.

- โข Marks placed on firm, circular, non-deformed sections of hose.
- โข Cutting directly on the puncture site, leaving weakened rubber near the new joint.
Make a Square, Clean Cut
Place the hose on a flat scrap board and align your utility knife blade perpendicular to the hose body. Slice through in a single firm, downward pressing motion to create a perfectly flat 90-degree end without jagged edges. Repeat for the other cut mark if splicing two ends together.

Slide Clamps on and Soften Hose Ends
Slide a stainless steel worm-gear clamp over each cut hose end, orienting the screw heads so they are easily accessible for tightening later. Dip the first 2 inches of the cut hose into hot water for 30 seconds or warm gently with a heat gun to make the rubber pliable. Smear a tiny drop of dish soap inside the hose opening.

- โข Forgetting to slide the clamp onto the hose before inserting the barbed fitting.

Insert the Brass Barbed Fitting
Push the barbed end of the brass mender firmly into the softened hose end using a straight, twisting motion. Drive the fitting in until the cut edge of the hose sits completely flush against the brass center stop ring. Repeat for the opposing hose section if doing a splice repair.

- โข No exposed barb ridges visible outside the hose opening.
- โข Stopping insertion before all barbs are submerged inside the hose wall.
Position and Tighten the Hose Clamps
Slide the hose clamp forward so it sits directly over the middle barbs, approximately 1/4 to 3/8 inch back from the cut hose end. Tighten the clamp screw using a nut driver until the clamp band bites firmly into the rubber jacket without cutting through it. Repeat for the second clamp if repairing a splice.
- โข Clamp sits squarely 1/4-inch back from hose edge, embedded firmly into rubber outer layer.
- โข Clamp band is flat and concentric around the hose without tilting.
- โข Placing the clamp too far back (past the barbs) or right on the cut edge, which causes blowouts.

Pressurize and Test the Repair
Connect the hose to an outdoor spigot and attach a closed spray nozzle at the far end to create static backpressure. Turn the water supply valve fully on and inspect the repaired joint closely for 60 seconds. Check for any dripping, misting, or hose swelling around the clamp perimeter.
- โข Hose holds full static water pressure without dripping or weeping at the brass junction.
- โข Repaired joint remains rigid and straight under line pressure.
- โข Testing with an open nozzle, which fails to test the repair under full static line pressure.
