Determine Handing and Swing Direction
Examine the hinge placement and stop molding to confirm whether the door swings toward you or pushes away. Check that the door stop molding sits on the frame side opposite the intended push direction. Verify that all secondary privacy locks or deadbolts are disengaged before applying rotational torque.

Actuate the Handle and Retract the Latch
Grasp the knob or lever firmly and rotate it downward or clockwise until it reaches its mechanical stop. Observe the beveled spring latch retracting fully flush into the edge bore faceplate. Maintain rotation while initiating the initial swing pressure to keep the latch clear of the strike plate.

Relieve Friction and Weatherstrip Binding
Apply gentle inward pressure directly above the lockset to compress swollen weatherstripping or warped wood stops. Lubricate the Latch Bolt and Hinge Knuckles
Wipe away old grime and dust from the bevel bolt and strike plate using a microfiber rag. Puff dry graphite lubricant directly into the latch mechanism opening and onto each hinge knuckle seam. Cycle the handle and swing the door back and forth several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.

Secure Top Hinge Screws for Sag Clearance
Check if the top edge of the door drags against the head jamb during operation. Remove the center screw from the top frame hinge leaf and replace it with a 3-inch wood screw driven directly into the wall framing stud. Snug the screw until the hinge pulls tight and restores an even 1/8-inch reveal along the top and latch jambs.
