How to Make a Mini Water Pump and Filter Tank

๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Construct the Impeller
Cut a circular disc slightly smaller than the inside diameter of a bottle cap from thin, rigid plastic. Slice four small 5x5mm plastic fins and hot glue them radially onto the disc at 90-degree intervals. Pierce the exact center of the disc and press-fit it onto the shaft of the mini DC motor.

Fabricate the Pump Housing
Drill a 2mm hole through the center of the first bottle cap for the motor shaft. Drill a 5mm hole through the face of the second cap for the water inlet, and a 5mm hole into its side wall for the outlet. Glue a 20mm section of hollow pen barrel into the side hole to create the tangential discharge nozzle.

Assemble and Waterproof the Pump Chamber
Pass the motor shaft through the rear cap hole and glue the motor body firmly to the outside of the cap. Mount the impeller onto the shaft inside the cap, leaving a 1mm gap from the plastic face. Join the front cap (with the inlet and outlet) to the rear cap rim-to-rim and seal the entire seam with a generous bead of hot glue.

Build the Layered Filtration Column
Cut the bottom 5cm off a clean plastic bottle to turn it into an inverted funnel. Insert a dense wad of cotton wool tightly into the neck, followed sequentially by 2cm of activated charcoal, 3cm of washed fine sand, and 3cm of small pebbles. Place a second cotton pad on top to disperse incoming water evenly.

Plumb and Mount the System
Cut a second plastic bottle in half horizontally to create a lower clean-water reservoir basin. Seat the filtration column securely into the top opening of this reservoir. Attach flexible vinyl tubing from the pump's outlet pipe up to the top rim of the filtration column, securing the pump near the bottom basin with hot glue.

Wire, Prime, and Run the Pump
Connect the DC motor terminals to a switched 5V USB source or 9V battery harness. Submerge the pump inlet tube into an external dirty water container, fill the pump chamber with water using a dropper to prime the impeller, and turn on the power switch. Observe water discharging into the top of the filter column and dripping clean into the base reservoir.
