📋 Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Measure and Mark Tine Depth
Insert the tips of the fork tines into the latch hole of your door's strike plate while the door is open. Use a permanent marker to draw a straight line across all tines flush against the outer face of the strike plate. This mark indicates the exact depth where the metal must bend to grip the jamb firmly.
- • A clear, level marker line drawn across all fork tines approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the tips.
- • Marking the tines too deep, which prevents the door from latching shut once installed.
Bend the Tine Tips to Ninety Degrees
Clamp the fork in a bench vise so the marked line on the tines aligns precisely with the top edge of the vise jaws. Grip the protruding tine tips with heavy-duty pliers and bend them evenly until they form a sharp 90-degree angle. Check that all tines bend uniformly in the same direction.

Cut the Handle from the Fork Head
Reposition the fork in the vise, clamping the neck area just below the base of the tines. Use a hacksaw to cut straight across the neck, completely separating the handle from the tine head. Maintain a steady, moderate sawing pace until the handle drops free.

File and Smooth All Cut Edges
Secure the cut tine head in the vise with the severed neck facing upward. Draw a flat metal file across the raw cut until the sharp burrs and rough edges are completely flattened, then repeat this filing process on the cut end of the handle. Finish by buffing the edges with medium-grit sandpaper to ensure a smooth, snag-free surface.

Fit and Engage the Fork Lock
Hook the bent tines directly into the doorframe strike plate with the flat base pointing into the room. Close the door firmly so the base of the tines protrudes inward past the door edge. Slide the flat handle vertically down through the center gap of the tines against the door face to wedge the door securely shut.
