- โข Wear an N95 respirator and safety goggles when trimming and cutting rigid foam panels.
- โข Shut off electrical power to all exterior outlets and light fixtures before drilling into wall framing.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Prep the Wall Sheathing and Install Weather Barrier
Inspect the bare exterior OSB or plywood sheathing, replacing any rotted sections and hammering down proud fasteners. Unroll your vapor-permeable weather-resistive barrier (WRB) horizontally starting from the bottom plate, overlapping upper layers over lower layers by at least 6 inches. Staple the barrier securely every 12 inches and seal all horizontal and vertical seams using approved exterior acrylic seam tape.
- โข WRB lies completely flat against sheathing without ripples or tears.
- โข All overlap seams are fully covered with taped seals.
- โข Overlapping the lower barrier layer over the upper layer, which channels water behind the wrap.
- โข Leaving staple punctures unsealed near rough openings.
Mark Framing Stud Locations Externally
Locate every wall stud behind the sheathing from inside or by referencing exposed framing lines at the top and bottom plates. Snap clear, vertical chalk lines down the entire height of the WRB to mark the exact center of each stud. These guide lines ensure that when the foam is installed, your long structural screws will hit solid framing rather than hollow sheathing.
- โข Crisp vertical chalk lines run from the soffit line down to the foundation sill.
- โข Stud centers are confirmed at standard 16-inch or 24-inch intervals.
- โข Relying on guesswork instead of snapping plumb lines, causing fasteners to miss studs.
- โข Failing to mark corner framing clusters and window jack studs.
Fit and Fasten Rigid Foam Insulation Panels
Install the first row of rigid foam insulation horizontally along the bottom edge of the wall, using plastic-capped masonry/foam fasteners just to hold panels temporarily in place. Cut panels tightly around window and door jambs using a sharp utility knife and straightedge. Stagger all vertical joints by at least 12 inches on successive rows, ensuring tight edge-to-edge butt joints with zero gaps.
- โข Foam panels are level, flush, and arranged in a staggered running-bond pattern.
- โข Corners overlap alternately to create strong interlocking joints.
- โข Aligning vertical seams in a continuous column, which creates major thermal bridges.
- โข Overdriving temporary fasteners, which crushes the foam core.
Air-Seal Foam Seams, Penetrations, and Openings
Apply high-tack exterior flashing tape centered directly over all butt joints, window flashings, and panel seams, pressing it down firmly with a roller or plastic squeegee. Fill larger voids or perimeter gaps around hose bibs and conduit using low-expansion expanding foam. Once cured, slice away excess expanding foam flush with the panel face and cover the penetration with flashing tape.
- โข All horizontal and vertical board seams are completely sealed beneath wrinkle-free tape.
- โข Penetrations are completely air-tight and flashed in a shingle fashion.
- โข Applying tape to wet or dusty foam surfaces, preventing a permanent bond.
- โข Using standard duct tape or non-UV-rated adhesive tape that will degrade quickly.
Install Bug Screen and Mount Vertical Furring Strips
Fold aluminum bug screen mesh along the bottom edge of the foam plane to prevent pest entry into the air gap. Align 1x4 pressure-treated furring strips vertically over the chalked stud lines on top of the foam and bug screen. Drive long structural screws through the furring strips and foam directly into the center of the wall studs, spaced every 16 to 24 inches vertically.
- โข Furr strips form a rigid, plumb rain-screen plane across the entire wall facade.
- โข Bug screen wraps securely behind and around the bottom termination of the furring strips.
- โข Using undersized screws that fail to achieve at least 1.25 inches of embedment into structural framing.
- โข Forgetting the bug screen, leaving a direct pathway for wasps and rodents behind siding.
