๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Establish Chalk Line and Mount Starter Strip
Measure down from the eaves or up from the foundation to find the lowest point of your framing, then snap a level chalk line around the perimeter. Align the top edge of the starter strip along the chalk line, leaving 1/4-inch gaps between adjoining strips. Drive galvanized roofing nails into the center of the pre-punched slots every 8 to 10 inches, leaving 1/32-inch clearance between the nail head and vinyl.
- โข A continuous, horizontal metal or vinyl starter strip runs parallel to the foundation line.
- โข Small 1/4-inch expansion gaps are visible between adjacent starter strip sections.
- โข Starter strips slide slightly left-to-right when pushed by hand.
- โข Nailing the starter strip down tightly against the wall sheathing.
- โข Snapping an unlevel chalk line by following a sloped foundation.
Install Corner Posts
Hang corner posts 1/4 inch below the top edge of the starter strip and 3/8 inch below the soffit line. Drive the top nail at the very top of the highest nailing slot to anchor the post vertically. Drive remaining nails in the exact center of slots every 8 to 12 inches down the post, keeping them loose so the post hangs freely.
- โข Corner posts stand perfectly plumb on both faces when checked with a level.
- โข Top fastener is seated at the upper apex of the slot; lower fasteners are centered in slots.
- โข Fastening lower nails at the top or bottom of slots instead of the center.
- โข Driving nails so tight that the corner post flange buckles.
Install J-Channel Around Openings
Cut J-channel for the bottom, sides, and top of each window and door opening, adding 2 inches to length measurements for miter tabs. Cut a 1-inch drainage tab on the top piece and fold it downward into the side channels to shed water. Nail the J-channels every 8 to 12 inches into slot centers, leaving 1/32-inch space under the nail heads.
- โข J-channel neatly frames all four sides of window and door casings with 45-degree mitered overlaps at top corners.
- โข Internal drainage tabs are folded downward inside side channels.
- โข Square-butting top corners without drainage tabs, allowing water to infiltrate wall cavity.
- โข Nailing J-channel flanges too tightly, preventing thermal expansion.
Lock and Hang Siding Panels
Hook the bottom lip of the first siding panel firmly into the starter strip until you feel and hear the lock engage fully across the entire piece. Push upward gently to maintain the lock without pulling the panel taut. Drive galvanized nails into the center of the pre-punched slots every 16 inches on stud centers, leaving a 1/32-inch gap (the thickness of a dime) between nail head and vinyl.
- โข Bottom edge is completely locked into the starter strip along its full length.
- โข Panel can be slid laterally by hand with light pressure.
- โข All nails are centered horizontally within their respective slots.
- โข Pulling the panel upwards aggressively while nailing, which locks the expansion joint and causes severe rippling.
- โข Face-nailing directly through the visible face of the panel.
Overlap and Stagger Consecutive Courses
Overlap adjacent panel ends by 1 to 1-1/4 inches, staggering overlapping joints at least 24 inches horizontally from the row below. Leave a 1/4-inch expansion gap between panel ends and the inside of corner posts or J-channels (increase to 3/8-inch if installing below 40ยฐF). Continue upward, checking course level every 3 rows relative to the eaves.
- โข Joint laps consistently face away from the main traffic area or front view.
- โข Vertical joint locations are staggered at least 24 inches apart row-to-row.
- โข A visible 1/4-inch space exists inside all J-channels and corner channels for thermal movement.
- โข Butting panels tight against corner posts or channel stops.
- โข Aligning seams vertically across adjacent rows, creating visible stair-stepping lines.
Fit Undersill Trim and Top Course
Nail undersill utility trim horizontally right below the soffit or window sill. Measure the distance from the second-to-last panel lock to the inside of the trim, minus 1/4 inch, and rip the final siding panel to that width. Use a snap-lock punch tool every 6 inches along the cut top edge with lugs facing outward, then snap the punched panel firmly into the undersill trim channel.
- โข Top panel is securely held inside the undersill trim with no visible exposed nails.
- โข The top panel remains straight, level, and fully integrated with the row below.
- โข Face-nailing the top panel through the front vinyl surface directly into the soffit or trim.
- โข Punching snap-lock tabs facing inward, preventing lugs from catching the trim lip.
