📋 Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Subfloor Prep and Door Jamb Undercutting
Thoroughly sweep and vacuum the subfloor until completely free of grit. Lay a scrap plank upside down against every door casing and flush-cut the casing with an oscillating tool or flush saw so planks slide cleanly underneath.
- • Subfloor is completely bare, dry, and clean with zero debris.
- • Door casings have a clean horizontal gap that matches plank thickness.
- • Leaving drywall dust or tiny pebbles on the subfloor.
- • Not undercutting door jambs, forcing awkward notch cuts later.
Lay the First Row with Expansion Spacers
Place 1/4-inch spacers against the starting wall. Lay the first row from left to right with the tongue side facing the wall, interlocking the short end joints tightly.
- • Consistent 1/4-inch gap maintained between the wall and planks.
- • First row forms a dead-straight line with no gap at end joints.
- • Placing planks flush against drywall without expansion gaps.
- • Allowing the first row to bow along an uneven wall.
Cut and Stagger Planks for Subsequent Rows
Cut the first plank of the second row so its end joint is offset by at least 8 inches from the previous row. Score the vinyl surface along a speed square with a utility knife, then snap the plank downward over your knee or a table edge.
- • End joints across adjacent rows are staggered by 8 inches or more in an irregular pattern.
- • Snapped cut edges are crisp and straight.
- • Creating an H-pattern or staircase pattern with repeated cut lengths.
- • Using cut starter planks shorter than 6 inches.
Engage and Lock Long and Short Edges
Angle the long side tongue into the groove of the previous row at roughly 20 to 30 degrees and drop it flat. Lightly tap the tapping block with a rubber mallet along the long edge, then gently tap the short end until the joint disappears.
- • Plank surface is completely flush with no visible seam lines.
- • No gaps or raised ridges at the horizontal or vertical seams.
- • Hitting the plank edge directly with the mallet instead of a tapping block.
- • Tapping too hard and breaking the delicate locking click mechanism.
Install the Final Row with a Pull Bar
Measure the remaining gap to the wall minus the 1/4-inch expansion space, and rip the final planks to width using a utility knife. Drop each ripped piece into place and use the flooring pull bar hooked over the cut edge, tapping it with the mallet to lock it into the second-to-last row.
- • Final row is locked completely flush into the adjacent row.
- • A continuous 1/4-inch gap remains along the entire finishing wall.
- • Forgetting to subtract the expansion gap when measuring final row width.
- • Using the pull bar upside down, damaging the wall surface.
