How to Install a Google Nest Learning Thermostat

Turn off HVAC power and verify shutdown
Locate your main circuit breaker or HVAC service switch and flip it to OFF. Adjust the temperature on your old thermostat and wait 30 seconds to ensure the furnace or AC does not kick on. The old display should be completely powered down or unresponsive to heat/cool calls.

Remove faceplate and photograph wire configuration
Pull the old thermostat faceplate straight off its wall plate. Take a clear, high-resolution photo showing exactly which wire connects to which labeled terminal (such as R, W, Y, G, C). If you have jumper wires between R and Rc, note that Nest does not need them.

Label wires and disconnect old backplate
Affix the matching Nest sticker label to each individual wire based on the terminal it is currently screwed into. Loosen the terminal screws, pull the wires free, and wrap them around a pencil across the hole so they cannot slide back into the wall. Unscrew and remove the old mounting plate.

Mount the Nest base with the built-in level
Thread the labeled wire bundle through the center hole of the Nest base plate (and optional decorative trim plate if covering unpainted wall spots). Hold the base against the wall and rotate it until the bubble in the built-in level is centered between the two lines. Drive the included screws directly into drywall or pre-drilled pilot holes.

Insert wires into terminal push-buttons

Press down the terminal button on the Nest base and push each labeled wire into its matching connector port (R/Rc into R, W into W1, etc.) until the button stays depressed. Ensure no stray bare copper extends past the plastic housing.

Return to the breaker panel and switch the HVAC power back ON.
