๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ 1/2-inch square-notched trowel
- โ Margin trowel
- โ 4-foot spirit level
- โ Angle grinder with continuous diamond blade
- โ Rubber mallet
- โ Grouting sponge and clean water bucket
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Stacked stone corner ledger panels
- โ Polymer-modified thinset mortar
- โ Clean water
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Wear an N95 respirator and safety glasses when dry-cutting stone to prevent crystalline silica dust inhalation.
- โข Wear heavy-duty nitrile or coated work gloves to protect hands from caustic mortar and sharp natural stone edges.
- โข Ensure bottom support ledge is level and load-bearing before stacking heavy stone courses.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Dry-Lay and Alternate Corner Pieces
Unbox multiple packages of corner panels and lay them out on the floor beside the wall. Stack stone corner pieces have alternating long and short legs; alternate their orientation every course to avoid continuous vertical seams. Dry-fit at least 4 to 5 courses on the floor to verify tight interlock and varied color distribution.
- โข A floor mockup showing corner pieces alternating long-edge-left and long-edge-right.
- โข Tight interlocking joints with no visible repeating color blocks.
- โข Stacking all pieces with the long leg on the same side, creating a weak, unsightly straight seam.
Mix Polymer-Modified Thinset Mortar
Add clean water to a bucket, then gradually add mortar powder. Mix with a drill and paddle mixer until it reaches a creamy, non-sagging consistency similar to thick peanut butter. Let the mix slake for 5 to 10 minutes, then remix briefly without adding more water.
- โข Mortar holds its shape on a tilted trowel without slumping or running off.
- โข Smooth, lump-free paste with uniform color.
- โข Adding too much water, causing stone panels to slide down the wall under their own weight.
Install the Base Corner Piece
Comb a layer of thinset onto the wall using the notched trowel, then back-butter the entire rear of the first corner piece with 100% coverage using the flat side of your trowel. Press the corner piece firmly against the bottom corner of the wall, wiggling it slightly to collapse the mortar ridges. Check both faces of the corner with a torpedo or spirit level.
- โข The base corner piece is seated tight to the substrate and perfectly level on both axes.
- โข Mortar squeeze-out is minimal at the exposed face but full behind the stone.
- โข Failing to back-butter the stone panel, leaving hollow voids behind the heavy corner.
Stack and Interlock Successive Corner Courses
Apply thinset to the next section of wall and back-butter the second corner piece, reversing its orientation relative to the first piece. Press it firmly down onto the base stone and into the corner, tapping gently with a rubber mallet if needed to seat it. Check plumb along the outer corner apex with a spirit level after placing every piece.
- โข Corner pieces alternate short and long returns cleanly up the wall.
- โข The level bubble sits centered when placed vertically against the outer apex of the corner.
- โข Letting mortar squeeze out into the face joints without wiping, locking in visible gray cement stains.
Cut and Fit Field Stone Transitions
Measure from the flat edge of your installed corner piece to the end of the wall run or next feature. Cut flat field ledger panels using an angle grinder equipped with a continuous diamond blade to tie the field stone into the corner returns. Ensure cut edges face away from the prominent corner line or are concealed in corners/terminations.
- โข Field ledger panels abut the corner returns tightly with consistent horizontal joint lines.
- โข No factory cut lines visible on the front focal points of the corner.
- โข Placing rough, straight diamond-cut edges directly at the corner face instead of using dedicated interlocking corner units.
Clean Stone Face and Clear Joint Squeeze-Out
Inspect the entire corner assembly for any mortar pushed out onto the front face or between interlocking fingers. Use a margin trowel or nylon bristle brush to rake out wet mortar sitting higher than the stone depth. Wipe stone faces clean with a damp, wrung-out grouting sponge, rinsing the sponge frequently in clean water.
- โข Stone surface is clean and free of mortar smears or haze.
- โข Joints between stacked pieces look natural with no thinset bridging the stone faces.
- โข Using a soaking wet sponge, which washes out thinset from behind the stone and causes mortar bleeding.

Don’t have everything?
- No Angle grinder with continuous diamond blade? Wet tile saw with a diamond stone blade
- No Rubber mallet? Block of wood tapped gently with a standard claw hammer
