📋 Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Fasten Receiving Channel Along the Wall
Snap a chalk line along the exterior wall level with the bottom edge of the wooden sub-fascia. Secure F-channel or J-channel along this line, nailing every 12 to 16 inches into wall studs. Leave a 1/4-inch expansion gap at all corner intersections.
- • Channel runs in a straight, horizontal line across the wall.
- • Nails sit centered in nailing slots without pinching the vinyl tight.
- • Small 1/4-inch expansion gaps visible at end joints.
- • Nailing the channel too tightly against the wall, preventing thermal expansion.
- • Failing to level the channel with the bottom of the sub-fascia board.
Cut Soffit Panels to Length
Measure the distance from the inside back of the wall channel to the outer edge of the sub-fascia board. Subtract 1/4 inch to allow for seasonal expansion. Mark panels using a speed square and cut clean 90-degree sections using aviation snips.
- • Clean, square-cut panel ends free of jagged vinyl burrs.
- • Panels cut uniformly 1/4 inch shorter than the span measurement.
- • Cutting panels exact fit with zero clearance, leading to buckling in summer heat.
- • Not squaring cuts, causing panels to drift diagonally down the run.
Slide and Fasten Soffit Panels
Slide the cut panel end fully into the wall receiving channel and align the outer edge with the sub-fascia. Lock the tongue-and-groove joint into the previous panel until it snaps securely. Fasten the outer edge to the sub-fascia using staples or nails through the factory slots.
- • Interlocking seams between adjacent panels clicked flush with no visible gaps.
- • Outer edge securely fastened into the bottom of the wood sub-fascia board.
- • Failing to fully engage the locking hem between consecutive panels.
- • Over-driving fasteners, which cracks vinyl flanges.
Measure and Cut Fascia Wrap
Measure aluminum fascia sections to length, adding 1 to 2 inches for overlapping corner tabs. Cut the fascia using tin snips, making 1-inch relief notches on the bottom lip at corners to allow seamless bending around the sub-fascia ends.
- • Straight cut lines on aluminum trim with clean 1-inch bend tabs at corners.
- • No sharp burrs or metal tears along cut edges.
- • Cutting fascia flush at corners without an overlap tab, exposing raw wood.
- • Crinkling the top lip during cutting, which prevents it from slipping under drip edge.
Install and Nail Fascia Trim
Tuck the top edge of the aluminum fascia underneath the existing roof drip edge. Push the bottom return lip firmly over the bottom edge of the installed soffit panels. Secure by driving painted aluminum trim nails upward through the bottom return lip into the sub-fascia every 24 inches.
- • Top edge of fascia rests fully concealed beneath the drip edge.
- • Bottom return lip holds soffit ends securely against the sub-fascia.
- • Trim nails placed evenly through the bottom lip without denting the face.
- • Face-nailing through the front of the fascia metal, causing oil-canning (buckling).
- • Driving nails too deep and severely denting the aluminum trim.
