๐ Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Mark and Mount Electrical Boxes
Measure and mark box heights on studs: 12 to 16 inches from subfloor for receptacles and 48 inches for light switches. Align the box alignment tabs against the stud face to ensure the box projects 1/2 inch forward for future drywall. Drive the integrated mounting nails squarely into the stud with a hammer.

Bore Cable Pathways Through Studs
Mark a level horizontal line across studs at roughly 18 to 24 inches above the floor. Chuck a 3/4-inch auger bit into the drill and bore holes directly through the horizontal center of each stud along the run. Ensure the drill remains perpendicular to avoid blowing out the side of the framing.
- โข Clean, circular holes bored through the exact center of each stud in a straight horizontal line
- โข At least 1-1/4 inches of solid wood remaining on both front and back stud faces
- โข Drilling too close to the stud edge where drywall screws will puncture the wire
- โข Drilling wavy, misaligned holes that make cable pulling difficult
Pull Cable and Secure with Staples
Feed NM-B cable smoothly through the bored holes from the power source toward the outlet boxes, avoiding tight kinks or twists. Secure the cable with plastic insulated staples flat against the stud face within 8 inches of plastic boxes (12 inches for metal) and every 4.5 feet along runs. Drive staples snug against the outer jacket without crushing or flattening the insulation.
- โข Cable runs loosely through stud centers with a slight dip (slack) before entering boxes
- โข Staples holding cable securely without indenting or pinching the white or yellow outer sheath
- โข Over-hammering staples until the plastic jacket pinches and damages inner wire insulation
- โข Pulling cable drum-tight with no expansion slack
Route Cable into Boxes and Strip Leads
Knock out a rear cable entry tab on the electrical box and push the NM-B cable inside until at least 1/4 inch of sheathed cable extends into the box. Pull 6 to 8 inches of free conductor length out beyond the front edge of the box. Use a cable ripper to slice the outer sheath, peel it back, and snip away the plastic sheath and paper wrapping with lineman's pliers.
- โข 1/4 to 1/2 inch of intact outer jacket visible inside the box entry hole
- โข At least 6 inches of individual insulated conductors extending out the box front
- โข Stripping the outer jacket outside the box, leaving exposed bare conductors in the wall cavity
- โข Cutting wire leads shorter than 6 inches, making device hookup impossible
Install Steel Nail Plates
Inspect every stud where NM-B cable passes through holes closer than 1-1/4 inches to either front or back edge of framing. Center a steel nail plate over the hole on the front face of the stud. Hammer the integrated prongs firmly into the wood until the plate sits flush with the stud face.

- โข No sharp edges protruding past the stud plane that could interfere with drywall hanging
- โข Skipping nail plates on studs where the hole was drilled off-center
