๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ 4-foot level or laser level
- โ Stud finder
- โ Cordless drill and driver
- โ Cabinet face-frame clamps
- โ Countersink drill bit set
- โ Tape measure
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ 2-1/2 inch cabinet screws (washer head)
- โ Wood shims
- โ 1x4 pine board (for temporary ledger)
- โ 3-inch drywall/wood screws (for ledger)
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Turn off electrical breakers for outlets located along the cabinet run before driving screws near wiring paths.
- โข Verify wall anchor screw engagement directly into center of solid wall studs, never rely on drywall alone.
- โข Use two people or support jacks when lifting and holding upper wall cabinets in place.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Find Floor High Spots and Draw Reference Lines
Place a level across the floor along the cabinet footprint to find the highest point. Measure up 34-1/2 inches from the highest floor point to mark the top of the base cabinets, then measure 54 inches up from the floor to mark the bottom of standard upper cabinets. Draw continuous, perfectly level reference lines across all installation walls using a long level or laser line.
- โข Sharp pencil lines running horizontally along all cabinet walls checked level across corners
- โข A marked reference point showing the floor's highest elevation point
- โข Measuring up from a low spot on the floor, causing base cabinets to exceed standard counter height
Locate and Mark Wall Stud Centers
Run a stud finder horizontally across the installation zone to detect the edges of every wall stud. Mark the center of each stud along the drywall at heights both above and below the cabinet layout lines. Verify stud center accuracy by driving a small finish nail or thin drill bit where the cabinet body will cover the hole.
- โข Vertical pencil lines marking stud centers running through the cabinet footprint zone
- โข Visible test holes confirming solid lumber behind drywall
- โข Assuming studs are uniformly spaced on 16-inch centers without verifying every single one
Mount the Temporary Upper Ledger Board
Align the top edge of a straight 1x4 board flush against the lower reference line marked for the upper cabinets. Fasten the 1x4 ledger securely into every wall stud along the run using 3-inch screws. Double-check the top edge of the board with a spirit level before placing any load onto it.
- โข A straight 1x4 ledger securely attached to the wall, top edge aligned with the layout line
- โข At least two screws driven firmly into every intercepted stud
- โข Using a bowed or warped board that throws the upper cabinet alignment off level
Hang and Fasten Upper Cabinets
Lift the first upper cabinet onto the ledger board, align it with the corner or layout boundary, and drive 2-1/2 inch cabinet screws loosely through the rear hanging rail into the wall studs. Lift the adjacent cabinet onto the ledger, align the face frames, clamp them flush with face-frame clamps, and drill pilot holes through the face frame edges. Fasten the face frames together with trim screws, then tighten all wall screws into the studs, adding shims behind the cabinet back wherever gaps exist.
- โข Face frames aligned perfectly flush with invisible seam lines
- โข Washer-head cabinet screws seated firmly through the top and bottom internal hanging rails into studs
- โข Cabinet faces vertical and plumb according to a spirit level
- โข Tightening rear wall screws before clamping face frames together, pulling boxes out of square
Set and Level the Base Cabinets
Remove the temporary upper ledger board and set the corner or highest-elevation base cabinet in position. Slide wood shims underneath the cabinet base until the top edges sit precisely flush with your 34-1/2 inch wall reference line and read level both front-to-back and side-to-side. Position neighboring base cabinets, clamp face frames flush, pre-drill, and secure the face frames together before driving wall screws.
- โข Top perimeter of base cabinet run sits completely flat and level across multiple units
- โข Wood shims tucked beneath cabinet base with face frames locked flush together
- โข Shimming only the front and leaving the rear base unsupported, leading to countertop sag
Anchor Base Cabinets and Trim Shims
Insert shims between the rear cabinet mounting rail and the wall wherever gaps appear to avoid racking the boxes. Drive 2-1/2 inch cabinet screws through the back hanging rail and shims directly into the wall studs. Score all protruding floor and wall shims with a sharp utility knife and snap them off flush with the cabinet edges.
- โข Screw heads seated flat against rear structural rail without crushing wood fibers
- โข All protruding shims broken cleanly flush with cabinet edges and toe-kicks
- โข Zero movement in cabinet run when pulled or leaned against
- โข Over-driving screws through unsupported gaps, which cracks the back panel and twists the cabinet box

Don’t have everything?
- No Cabinet face-frame clamps? Standard F-clamps with scrap wood blocks to protect the finish
- No Laser level? 4-foot spirit level combined with a long straightedge
