๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Measuring tape
- โ Sharp scissors
- โ Microfiber cleaning cloth
- โ Step stool or ladder
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ LED light strip kit with power adapter and controller
- โ 70% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol
- โ Corner connectors (optional)
- โ Adhesive wire mounting clips
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Always disconnect the power adapter from the wall outlet before cutting or connecting strips.
- โข Cut LED strips only along designated copper solder pads; cutting elsewhere destroys the circuit.
- โข Do not leave the LED reel powered on while tightly coiled for more than 1 minute to prevent overheating.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Measure Path and Plan Power Route
Measure the total length of the installation run with a tape measure. Locate the nearest electrical outlet and verify that the power adapter cord and controller can comfortably reach the start of the LED strip without stretching.
- โข Tape measure extended along the installation edge
- โข Power supply placed near the target outlet within reach of the start line
- โข Starting the strip on the opposite side away from the power outlet
- โข Forgetting to account for corners or obstacles
Clean and Dry the Mounting Surface
Pour isopropyl alcohol onto a microfiber cloth and thoroughly wipe down the entire mounting surface to remove grease and dust. Allow the surface to air dry completely for two minutes so the adhesive can bond properly.
- โข Surface wiped clean with no visible dust, wood shavings, or grease spots
- โข Surface fully dry to the touch with no wet streaks
- โข Using water or soapy cleaner that leaves behind residue
- โข Applying the strip immediately while the alcohol is still damp
Test the LED Strip Before Mounting
Unspool a few feet of the light strip and plug it into the controller and power supply. Turn on the lights and cycle through colors to verify all diodes work before sticking anything to the wall.
- โข All diodes across the unspooled strip illuminate uniformly
- โข Controller responds correctly to remote or app inputs
- โข Mounting the entire strip before verifying whether any section is defective
Cut the Strip to Length
Hold the strip against your measured run to locate the nearest cut line. Use sharp scissors to cut cleanly straight through the center of the copper solder pads marked with a scissor icon.
- โข Clean, straight 90-degree cut centered across the copper contact pads
- โข Half of the copper pads remaining visible on the end of the active strip
- โข Cutting between the designated marks through the circuit traces or diodes
- โข Cutting the strip while connected to live power
Peel and Press the Strip Along the Line
Peel back 6 to 12 inches of adhesive backing at a time from the start of the strip. Press the strip firmly against the prepped surface with your thumb, smoothing it along the guideline without twisting the flexible circuit.
- โข Strip runs perfectly straight and flat against the surface
- โข No bubbling, sagging, or exposed peeling adhesive backing
- โข Peeling the entire backing off at once, causing the strip to tangle and stick to itself
- โข Bending the strip sharply at 90-degree corners, which cracks internal copper traces
Connect Power and Secure Loose Cables
Connect the strip end to the controller cable, matching any polarity arrows. Use adhesive cable clips to secure the excess power cord and controller neatly against the wall or cabinet underside.
- โข All wiring tucked flat and anchored with mounting clips
- โข Strip powers on completely with no flickering when cables are handled
- โข Leaving the heavy power adapter hanging unsupported from the strip connection

Don’t have everything?
- No 70% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol? Alcohol prep pads or denatured alcohol
- No Adhesive wire mounting clips? Small strips of double-sided mounting tape or hot glue dabs on the wire jacket
