- โ Circular saw with fine-finish blade
- โ Belt sander or coarse sanding block
- โ Compass or scribing tool
- โ 7/16-inch open-end wrench
- โ 4-foot bubble level
- โ Caulk gun
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Postform laminate countertop sections
- โ Miter bolt kit (tite-joint fasteners)
- โ 1-1/4 inch wood screws
- โ Color-matched 100% silicone sealant
- โ Wood glue
- โ Painter's tape
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Wear safety glasses and an N95 dust mask when cutting or sanding laminate and particleboard core.
- โข Verify screw lengths against countertop substrate thickness before driving to prevent puncturing the laminate surface.
- โข Ensure large countertop sections are fully supported on sawhorses to prevent sudden snapping along cut lines.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Level Cabinets and Dry-Fit Countertop
Place the 4-foot level across all base cabinets to verify they are coplanar. Set the countertop blanks onto the cabinets, pushing them firmly against the back wall to inspect the fit and overhangs. Check that front overhangs measure consistently at 1 to 1.5 inches along the entire run.
- โข Countertop rests flat on cabinet tops without rocking or bowing
- โข Front edge overhang is uniform across the entire cabinet face
- โข Failing to check for high cabinet corners before setting tops, causing teetering
Scribe the Backsplash to the Wall
Set a compass width to match the largest gap between the countertop backsplash and the uneven drywall. Run the compass pencil along the drywall face to transfer the wall profile onto the top edge of the integrated backsplash. Keep the compass strictly perpendicular to the wall throughout the stroke.
- โข A clear, uninterrupted pencil line traced along the top ridge of the backsplash mirroring wall bumps
- โข Tilting the compass angle mid-stroke, which distorts the scribed measurement
Trim and Sand to the Scribe Line
Remove the countertop to sawhorses and clamp it down securely. Use a belt sander fitted with 80-grit paper to remove excess material down to the scribed line on the backsplash. Angle the sander slightly inward to create a subtle back-bevel that guarantees a tight face contact against the wall.
- โข Material ground exactly to the pencil line with a slight rear undercut angle
- โข Sanding past the pencil line, creating an unfixable gap against the wall
Assemble Miter Joints
Apply a bead of wood glue along the wooden biscuit or tongue slots and run a continuous bead of silicone sealant along the top laminate seam. Slide the mitered countertop edges together and insert the miter bolts into the underside routing pockets. Tighten each bolt incrementally with a 7/16-inch wrench while ensuring the top laminate faces remain perfectly flush.
- โข Miter seam closed tight with even silicone squeeze-out along the entire joint
- โข Top laminate surface is perfectly flush across the seam when felt by hand
- โข Torquing one miter bolt completely before tightening the others, pulling the seam out of square
Fasten Countertop to Base Cabinets
Crawl inside the base cabinets and locate the corner gussets or top structural rails. Drill pilot holes upward through the cabinet brackets into the underside of the countertop substrate, stopping short of the laminate surface. Drive 1-1/4 inch screws through the brackets to pull the countertop down firmly against the cabinet frames.
- โข Screws fully seated flush into cabinet corner gussets
- โข Zero gap visible between cabinet top rails and the bottom of the countertop
- โข Using screws longer than 1-1/4 inches, which penetrate and ruin the top decorative laminate
Seal Backsplash and End Edges
Cut the caulk tube nozzle at a 45-degree angle to produce a small 1/8-inch bead. Apply a continuous line of color-matched 100% silicone sealant along the joint where the backsplash meets the drywall. Smooth the bead with a silicone profiling tool or a damp, gloved finger to create a neat, watertight concave transition.
- โข Smooth, uninterrupted concave silicone bead sealing the gap between backsplash and wall
- โข Applying too heavy a caulk bead, creating wide smears on textured drywall

Don’t have everything?
- No Belt sander? Hand rasp paired with a hard sanding block wrapped in 60-grit paper
- No Miter bolt wrench? Small adjustable crescent wrench or 7/16-inch ratcheting box wrench
