๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Pneumatic flooring nailer with rubber mallet
- โ 15-gauge finish nailer
- โ Miter saw
- โ Tapping block and pull bar
- โ Chalk line and tape measure
- โ Knee pads
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Hardwood floor planks (acclimated 3-5 days)
- โ 15 lb asphalt-saturated felt or rosin paper
- โ Flooring cleats or staples (1-1/2 to 2 inch)
- โ 1/2-inch wall spacers
- โ Matching wood putty
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Wear ANSI-rated eye protection and hearing protection when operating saws and pneumatic nailers.
- โข Verify subfloor thickness (minimum 3/4-inch plywood) to ensure fasteners do not penetrate live electrical or plumbing runs below.
- โข Keep hands and feet at least 12 inches away from the flooring nailer discharge foot during mallet strikes.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Prep Subfloor and Roll Underlayment
Sweep and vacuum the subfloor thoroughly, driving down any protruding screws or high spots. Roll out 15 lb roofing felt or rosin paper across the room perpendicular to the planned floor direction, overlapping seams by 4 inches. Staple the paper flat every few feet to keep it from shifting underfoot.
- โข Subfloor is completely covered in black or red paper with no exposed subfloor patches.
- โข Overlaps are flat with zero wrinkles, bubbles, or loose tears.
- โข Leaving subfloor drywall screws or grit under the paper, causing squeaks later.
Set Spacers and Install Starter Row
Place 1/2-inch spacers against the starting wall to allow room for seasonal wood expansion. Lay the first row of boards with the tongue facing out into the room along your chalk line. Face-nail through the top of the board 1/2 inch from the wall edge using a finish nailer every 8 inches, which will later be hidden by baseboards.
- โข Spacers are positioned uniformly along the back wall.
- โข Tongues face into the open room and boards align straight with the chalk line.
- โข Installing the starter row with the groove facing out, making pneumatic floor nailing impossible.
Blind-Nail Initial Narrow Rows
Because a bulky floor nailer cannot fit flush against the wall for the first 2-3 rows, switch to your 15-gauge finish nailer. Drive 2-inch finish nails manually at a 45-degree angle directly through the pocket where the tongue meets the board edge. Space nails every 6 to 8 inches, and 2 inches from every end joint.
- โข Nails sit recessed inside the tongue notch without splitting the wood.
- โข Next board's groove slides smoothly over the nailed tongue without hitting nail heads.
- โข Shooting nails straight down through the tongue, which blocks the mating groove of the next plank.
Rack Planks and Fasten Field Rows
Dry-lay (rack) 4 to 5 rows ahead, mixing boards from multiple boxes to blend color and grain variations while staggering end joints by at least 6 inches. Position the pneumatic flooring nailer shoe snugly over the plank tongue, tap the board tight using a rubber-faced tapping block, and strike the nailer actuator plunger firmly with the mallet. Drive a cleat every 6 to 8 inches along every board.
- โข Planks show zero hairline gaps between length edges and butt ends.
- โข End joints across adjacent rows are staggered at least 6 inches apart in a random, non-repeating pattern.
- โข H-pattern clustering where joints in alternating rows line up, creating weak spots.
- โข Hitting the plank tongue directly with a hammer, crushing the wood and preventing tight fits.
Cut and Fit Final Wall Rows
Measure the distance to the ending wall at multiple points, subtract the 1/2-inch expansion gap, and rip-cut the final row of planks to width on a table saw or track saw. Pull the boards tight against previous rows using a metal pull bar and mallet. Face-nail the final row 1/2 inch from the edge using the 15-gauge finish nailer, then fill any visible nail holes with matching wood putty.
- โข Final ripped boards are seated completely flat with tight seams against the preceding row.
- โข A consistent 1/2-inch gap remains along the entire closing wall, hidden beneath the baseboard line.
- โข Jamming the last board hard against drywall with zero expansion gap, which will cause center buckling in summer.

Don’t have everything?
- No Pneumatic flooring nailer? 15-gauge angled finish nailer blind-nailing into every tongue at 45 degrees
- No Commercial tapping block? Scrap hardwood board with intact groove placed against plank tongue
- No Pull bar? Heavy flat pry bar protected with a cardboard shim against drywall
