๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Random orbital sander (or sanding block)
- โ Propane torch or heat gun
- โ 1/8-inch square notch trowel
- โ 2-inch chop brush (natural bristle)
- โ Plastic mixing buckets with graduated measurements
- โ Drill with spiral paint mixing paddle
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ 100% solids epoxy countertop kit (Resin and Hardener)
- โ Bonding primer or epoxy undercoat
- โ Metallic mica powders and liquid color tints
- โ 91% Isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle
- โ Heavy-duty masking film and painter's tape
- โ Nitrile gloves
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Ensure cross-ventilation in the room and wear an organic vapor respirator while torching and mixing chemicals.
- โข Wear heavy-duty nitrile gloves and eye protection; uncured epoxy causes severe skin sensitization.
- โข Keep open flames from torches away from isopropyl alcohol mist, plastic sheeting, and flammable solvents.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Clean, Sand, and Mask Countertop
Scrub the existing surface with a degreaser, dry completely, and scuff thoroughly with 60 to 80-grit sandpaper to create a mechanical bond profile. Wipe away all dust using 91% isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free microfiber rag. Hang plastic drop cloths below the counter edges to catch heavy drips, and tape off adjoining walls completely.
- โข Uniform dull, scratched surface with no glossy patches remaining
- โข Plastic sheeting securely taped beneath the drip edge extending across floor
- โข Skipping sanding on high-gloss laminate or tile glaze
- โข Using water or tack cloths containing wax to wipe the surface
Apply Base Bonding Undercoat
Roll on a dedicated bonding primer or epoxy undercoat tinted closely to your desired stone background color. Apply two thin, even coats with a microfiber roller, allowing appropriate dry time between passes. Ensure the front edge profile and backsplash are thoroughly coated with zero substrate showing through.
- โข Solid, opaque base color with no underlying laminate pattern or seams visible
- โข Fully dry, matte finish across all flat decks and vertical edges
- โข Pouring clear/colored epoxy directly over raw, unsealed laminate seams
- โข Applying primer too thick, causing runs and sag lines on vertical edges
Measure, Mix, and Tint Epoxy
Measure resin (Part A) and hardener (Part B) in exact 1:1 volume ratios into a clean mixing bucket. Mix thoroughly with a drill paddle on low speed for 2 to 3 minutes, scraping bucket walls and bottom. Pour off small portions into secondary cups and stir in your metallic powders and liquid tints for accent veins.
- โข Clear epoxy is completely transparent with no cloudy striations or ribbons
- โข Accent cups show vibrant, thoroughly dissolved pigment with no dry powder clumps
- โข Estimating ratios by eye instead of using graduated bucket markers
- โข Mixing at high drill speed, which whips excessive micro-air into the epoxy
Pour and Spread Base Epoxy Coat
Pour the main clear or base-tinted epoxy in ribbons down the center of the countertop. Use an 1/8-inch square notch trowel held at a 45-degree angle to comb and distribute epoxy evenly to a self-leveling depth. Use your chop brush to tap ('chop') the wet epoxy, breaking trowel lines and guiding material over the front edges and backsplash.
- โข Even, glossy coat across the entire deck with no dry spots or thin hollows
- โข Epoxy flowing smoothly and evenly over vertical edge profiles
- โข Scraping the sides of the mixing bucket onto the deck (unmixed resin won't cure)
- โข Over-troweling after epoxy begins its initial gel phase
Create Stone Veining and Texture Effects
Drizzle accent colors across the wet base coat in organic, diagonal stone patterns using a mixing stick or cup spout. Lightly chop through the veins with a clean, dry natural bristle brush to soften sharp edges and feather colors naturally into the background. Spray fine mists of 91% isopropyl alcohol across veins to create authentic cell structures and depth.
- โข Soft, feathered mineral vein patterns resembling natural marble or granite
- โข Fine, circular cell blooming where isopropyl alcohol mist was applied
- โข Pouring straight geometric lines rather than natural diagonal stone flow
- โข Dumping large puddles of alcohol, causing cratering and washouts
Torch Surface Bubbles and Clear Drip Edge
Hold a propane torch 6 to 8 inches above the surface and sweep rapidly across the wet countertop like spray paint to release all trapped air bubbles. Repeat the sweeping torch passes 2 to 3 times over the first 30 minutes. Every 10 minutes, scrape a clean putty knife along the bottom underside edge of the counter to shave off hanging drips until the epoxy gels.
- โข Glass-smooth, mirror-like finish with zero micro-bubbles or pinholes
- โข Clean, flat bottom lip under the edge profile without hardened icicle drips
- โข Holding the flame stationary in one spot, scorching and yellowing the epoxy
- โข Forgetting to scrape bottom drip edges, leaving rock-hard stalactites

Don’t have everything?
- No Propane torch? High-output electric heat gun (hold 3-4 inches closer to pop surface bubbles)
- No 1/8-inch square notch trowel? Handheld foam roller frame used to gently spread wet epoxy to uniform depth
