Measure and Inspect Stud Framing

Measure the wall dimensions horizontally and vertically to map out panel placement. Inspect every stud face with a straightedge to identify high spots or protruding fasteners. Mark the stud centers on the floor and ceiling with a pencil so locations remain visible after drywall coverage.

Measure, Score, and Snap Panels

Align your 48-inch T-square along the cut line on the face paper side of the drywall sheet. Draw a utility knife firmly along the square edge to cut completely through the top paper and score the gypsum core. Stand the sheet on edge, fold back the waste piece to snap the core cleanly, then slice the back paper from behind.

Cut Openings for Electrical Boxes

Measure the exact distance from the adjoining board edge and ceiling down to the electrical outlet box. Transfer these measurements onto the drywall sheet face and draw the rectangle outline. Plunge a keyhole saw or drywall cutout tool through the interior of the outline and cut along the lines.

Lift the top sheet horizontally tight against the ceiling with the tapered edges facing outward. Secure the center of the panel first with drywall screws, then work outward toward the edges to keep the board flat. Space screws 12 inches apart in the field and 8 inches apart along panel edges.

Ensure vertical butt joints are offset from the top panel joints by at least 16 inches. Fasten the bottom sheet from the center outward into all studs at identical screw spacing.
