โš ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings

๐Ÿ“‹ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)

1

Measure and Map Framing Layout

Measure from the corner of the room to the center of each stud or joist. Plan panels to span horizontally across studs so seams land squarely on the center of framing members. If covering ceilings and walls, always install ceiling panels first.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Stud locations marked with pencil lines on the floor or adjacent framing
  • โ€ข Layout planned so sheet ends break directly over the centerline of a stud
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Starting with wall panels before completing the ceiling
  • โ€ข Planning seams that hang unsupported in empty stud bays
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Check for metal nail-guard plates on studs which indicate concealed plumbing or electrical wires.
2

Score and Snap Drywall Panels

Align your drywall T-square on the face (printed) side of the panel and pull the utility knife firmly along the edge to slice the paper. Stand the board upright, fold it backward to snap the gypsum core along the cut, then slice through the back paper layer from behind.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข A straight, 90-degree fractured edge without jagged gypsum chunks
  • โ€ข Back paper cleanly slit without tearing off the edge of the panel face
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Cutting from the rough backing paper side instead of the smooth face side
  • โ€ข Ripping the back paper instead of cutting it with a blade
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Always pull the knife toward you with your free hand well outside the cut path and behind the T-square guide.
3

Position and Tack Top Wall Sheets

Lift the top sheet tight against the ceiling joists with the factory tapered edge facing downward. Push the panel firmly flat against the wall studs and drive 2-3 temporary screws into the center studs to hold its weight.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Drywall sheet flush and pressed tight against the ceiling surface
  • โ€ข Panel securely holding on the studs without sagging
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Installing the bottom sheet first, making it harder to fit the top sheet snug against the ceiling
  • โ€ข Leaving large gaps wider than 1/8 inch along the ceiling line
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Maintain a wide stance and lift with your legs when pressing upper wall panels into place.
4

Install Bottom Wall Sheets with Offset Seams

Set the bottom panel against the studs, staggering the vertical butt joint at least 16 inches away from the upper sheet's vertical seam. Use a foot lever or flat bar to lift the bottom sheet 1/2 inch off the subfloor, pressing its tapered edge tight against the upper sheet's tapered edge.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Vertical seams staggered between top and bottom rows like brickwork
  • โ€ข Bottom edge suspended approximately 1/2 inch above the finished floor level
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Aligning upper and lower vertical joints continuously into a four-way intersection
  • โ€ข Resting drywall directly on bare concrete or subfloor where it can absorb moisture
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Do not leave scrap cutoffs with protruding screws on the walking path.
5

Drive and Dimple Screws

Fasten screws every 12 inches along ceiling joists and every 16 inches along wall studs. Drive screws so the head creates a slight concave dimple in the surface paper without piercing, breaking, or tearing through the paper fibers.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Screw heads recessed just below the paper surface forming a shallow bowl
  • โ€ข Drywall paper fully intact around the circumference of every screw head
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Over-driving screws so the head tears through the paper into the gypsum core
  • โ€ข Under-driving screws so heads protrude above the plane of the wall
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Keep fingers at least 3 inches clear of the screw tip while starting fasteners into hard wood framing.
6

Cut Out Outlet and Switch Openings

Locate electrical boxes behind the board by measuring coordinates or marking box edges with chalk prior to hanging. Plunge the drywall jab saw through the center of the box area and saw outward along the interior perimeter of the electrical box.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Clean rectangular cut around the electrical box with maximum 1/8-inch clearance
  • โ€ข Electrical box edges flush with the drywall face
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Cutting the opening oversized so standard switch plates cannot cover the gap
  • โ€ข Sawing blind and nicking electrical cables inside the box
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Turn off electrical breakers at the main panel before cutting around electrical boxes.
