📋 Step-by-Step Guide (7 Steps)
Locate and Mark Wall Studs
Slide a stud finder horizontally along the wall about 6 to 12 inches above the floor. Mark the center of each stud lightly with a pencil. Extend small vertical tick marks down near the floor where the baseboard will be nailed.
- • Pencil tick marks visible roughly every 16 inches along the lower perimeter of the drywall.
- • Nailing only into drywall without hitting studs, causing baseboards to pull loose over time.
Measure and Map Room Perimeter
Measure each wall section from corner to corner at floor level using a rigid tape measure. Plan to start with the longest continuous wall run using square 90-degree butt cuts or inside corner miters. Note down measurements with directional indicators for inside or outside corners.
- • A written list or sketched floor plan with exact corner-to-corner measurements noted to the nearest sixteenth of an inch.
- • Measuring high up on the wall instead of right at floor level where baseboard actually sits.
Cut Baseboard Corners and Scarf Joints
Set the miter saw table to 45 degrees left or right depending on the corner orientation. Place the baseboard flat against the saw fence with the finished face outward and make smooth, controlled downstrokes. For scarf joints on long runs, cut mating 30-degree angles overlapping in the direction of natural room entry.
- • Clean, tear-out-free angled cuts on baseboard ends matching the planned corner profile.
- • Cutting the 45-degree angle in the wrong direction, ruining the board length.
Dry-Fit Baseboard Sections
Place adjoining baseboard pieces in position along the wall without fasteners. Check that inside corners close tightly and outside miter seams align flush across the top and face. Trim minor adjustments on the miter saw if wall angles deviate from square.
- • Boards resting flat against flooring with corner joints touching uniformly along their entire profile.
- • Fastening pieces permanently before testing how the adjoining corner pieces intersect.
Nail Baseboard to Wall Studs
Press the baseboard firmly downward against the floor and back against the drywall. Drive two 18-gauge 2-inch brad nails into each marked stud location: one nail 1 inch from the bottom into the wall plate, and one nail near the top third. Angle nails slightly up and down into studs for maximum holding power.
- • Nails countersunk roughly 1/16 inch below the moulding surface with the baseboard held tightly against wall and floor.
- • Shooting nails directly into the center of mitered outside corners, which can split delicate corner profiles.
Fill Nail Holes and Sand Smooth
Press a small dab of wood filler or spackle into each countersunk nail hole with your finger or a putty knife, leaving a slight dome to account for shrinkage. Allow the filler to dry completely according to package instructions. Sand the filled spots flush using a fine 120- to 150-grit sanding block.
- • Completely smooth, level baseboard face where nail indentations are undetectable when running a finger across.
- • Sanding aggressively with coarse paper, gouging the surrounding primed baseboard surface.
Caulk Top Seams and Corner Joints
Cut the caulk tube nozzle at a 45-degree angle to create a small 1/8-inch opening. Squeeze a continuous, uniform bead of paintable acrylic latex caulk along the top gap between the baseboard and drywall, as well as inside corner seams. Smooth the bead immediately using a wet finger or damp lint-free cloth.
- • A seamless, concave, uniform caulk line bridging the baseboard and wall with zero visible black shadow lines.
- • Using silicone caulk instead of paintable acrylic caulk, which prevents paint from adhering later.
