How to Install Baseboard Molding

๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Locate and Mark Wall Studs
Run an electronic stud finder horizontally along the drywall roughly 4 to 6 inches above the floor. Mark the center of every stud with a light pencil tick mark. These marks indicate exactly where your brad nails must penetrate for solid structural backing.
- โข Clear vertical pencil marks spaced approximately 16 inches apart along the lower wall perimeter.
- โข Assuming studs are exactly 16 inches on center in corners or around doorways without verifying.
Measure and Cut Square Butts on Long Runs
Measure wall lengths corner-to-corner using a stiff tape measure held flat against the floor. For the first inside corner wall, cut the baseboard straight at a 90-degree square angle on both ends so it seats firmly into the drywall corners.
- โข Baseboard sits flat against the floor spanning from corner to corner with clean, square cut ends.
- โข Bending the tape measure sharply into corners instead of measuring from both sides and adding the overlap.
Cope Inside Corner Joints
Cut a 45-degree inside miter on the mating board to expose the profile contour. Follow the revealed profile line with a hand coping saw tilted slightly backward to create a back-bevel, cutting away the rear wood while preserving the exact face shape.
- โข The profiled edge of the coped board overlaps the flat face of the first board with zero visible gap.
- โข Cutting 90 degrees straight down with the coping saw instead of applying a 5-to-10 degree back-bevel.
Miter Outside Corners with Angle Division
Measure the outside corner angle with an angle finder rather than assuming a true 90-degree wall. Divide the reading in half on your miter saw, apply wood glue to the mating end grains, and test fit both pieces together before securing.
- โข Mitered edges meet flush along the entire height of the corner with no flared gap at the top or bottom.
- โข Cutting both pieces at exactly 45 degrees when most drywall corners are 88 to 92 degrees.
Nail Baseboard into Wall Studs and Sole Plate
Push the baseboard firmly down against the finished flooring and tight to the wall. Fire two 2-inch brad nails at each marked stud location: one angled down into the bottom sole plate, and one driven into the stud center 2 inches below the top edge.
- โข Brad nail heads are set slightly countersunk (1/16-inch below surface) into the wood with no surface swelling.
- โข Nailing straight into hollow drywall instead of lined-up stud marks, causing nails to pull free.
Caulk Top Seams and Fill Fastener Holes
Apply a narrow, continuous 1/8-inch bead of paintable acrylic latex caulk along the junction between the top of the baseboard and the drywall. Smooth the bead immediately with a damp finger or rag, then press wood filler into all countersunk nail holes.
- โข A seamless, concave transition from wall to baseboard with completely filled, flat nail holes.
- โข Applying too large of a caulk bead, creating wide smears on textured drywall.
