📋 Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Excavate and Clear the Subgrade
Dig out existing grass, roots, and organic soil to a uniform depth of 3 to 4 inches below the surrounding hardscape. Remove large stones, roots, and debris, then rake the excavated dirt smooth with a gentle slope toward drainage points.
- • Excavation depth measures consistently 3 to 4 inches below the top of bordering concrete or edging.
- • Soil bed is free of visible green vegetation, root clusters, and large rocks.
- • Excavating too shallow, leaving the finished turf sitting noticeably higher than surrounding patios or edging.
Spread and Compact the Aggregate Base
Distribute a 2.5 to 3-inch layer of crushed aggregate base evenly over the dirt bed. Lightly mist the material with water, then run a plate compactor across the entire area in overlapping passes until the base is rock hard and smooth.
- • Aggregate base sits 0.5 inches below the edge borders to account for turf backing thickness.
- • Walking firmly across the compacted base leaves no foot depressions or shifting stone.
- • Compacting dry aggregate, which fails to bind properly and creates low spots over time.
Install the Geotextile Weed Barrier
Roll out landscape fabric directly across the compacted aggregate, overlapping adjoining edges by 6 inches. Fasten the fabric into the aggregate base using galvanized landscape staples placed every 3 to 4 feet.
- • Fabric completely covers the aggregate base with 6-inch overlapping seams.
- • Weed barrier lies flat without loose ripples or bunched folds.
- • Leaving gaps between fabric panels where weeds can push through turf seams.
Roll Out Turf and Align Grain Direction
Roll synthetic turf across the prepared base, allowing 2 to 3 inches of excess material around the perimeter. Ensure the grass blade grain on all separate rolls points in the exact same direction toward the primary viewing area.
- • Turf pile on every adjacent roll leans in the exact same directional angle.
- • Turf rests completely flat without large buckles or tension ridges across the field.
- • Laying adjoining rolls with grains facing opposing directions, causing an obvious two-tone color difference.
Trim Edges and Bond Seams
Fold back adjacent turf edges and trim off the factory salvage strip 2 to 3 stitch rows in from the backing edge. Center seaming tape under the joint, apply exterior turf adhesive with a notched trowel or tube gun, and firmly press both turf edges into the adhesive without trapping any grass blades.
- • Seam line is completely invisible when viewed from standing eye level.
- • Grass blades along the seam stand upright rather than matted down in glue.
- • Overlapping the backing edges at the seam or leaving a gap wider than 1/8 inch.
Fasten Perimeter and Apply Infill
Drive 5-inch galvanized nails every 4 to 6 inches around the outer perimeter, keeping nails 1 inch inside the turf edge. Load silica sand into a drop spreader, apply 1 to 2 pounds per square foot across the dry lawn, and sweep vigorously against the grain with a stiff push broom to stand the blades upright.

- • No nail heads are visible above the turf backing, and infill is evenly distributed without white sand clumps.
- • Applying sand infill while the artificial turf fibers are wet, causing sand to stick to blades instead of settling into the base.
