📋 Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Locate and Mark the Ceiling Cutout
Choose a central hallway location below an open attic area. Use a stud finder to map ceiling joists and hold the damper box template flush against the ceiling between joists. Trace the template perimeter with a pencil.
- • A clear rectangular pencil outline visible on the ceiling centered neatly between joists.
- • Positioning the cutout directly over a structural joist rather than between them.
Cut the Ceiling Opening
Puncture the drywall inside the traced line with a drywall saw. Carefully saw along the perimeter line, holding a hand beneath the drywall panel to catch it as the final corner is cut free.
- • A clean rectangular hole in the ceiling with clear edges and no dangling paper tears.
- • Allowing the cut drywall core to fall and shatter or rip ceiling paper.
Hang the Fan Motor in the Attic
In the attic, secure the suspension bracket or heavy-duty hanging strap across two roof rafters. Suspend the fan motor unit using the manufacturer-supplied vibration-damping bracket, ensuring it hangs level.

- • Resting the motor directly on attic joists, which transmits severe vibration noise through the house.
Install the Damper Box and Ducting
Lower the damper box into the ceiling opening and fasten it to the joists using wood screws. Connect the flexible acoustic duct between the ceiling damper box and the suspended fan motor, securing each joint with zip ties and foil tape.
- • Damper box securely screwed into ceiling joists with flexible duct fully extended and foil-taped at both collars.
- • Leaving sharp bends or excessive slack in the duct, which restricts airflow and creates noise.
Wire the Fan and Wall Control
Run electrical cable from the breaker-isolated wall switch location up to the fan junction box. Connect black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), and bare copper to green ground screw with wire nuts, then secure the junction cover.
- • All wire nuts firmly seated with no exposed bare copper showing outside nuts, and junction box cover screwed shut.
- • Failing to clamp Romex wire at junction entry, risking insulation fraying against metal edges.
Install Ceiling Grille and Test
Attach the finished white grille over the ceiling damper opening using the provided trim screws. Restore power at the breaker panel, open a few house windows, and switch the fan on to verify airflow and damper operation.
