📋 Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Prepare Wall and Establish Centerline
Turn off power to outlets, remove faceplates, and wipe the wall clean of grease using degreaser. Measure the total length of the wall to find the exact center, then use a level to draw a plumb vertical reference line. Tape heavy craft paper or cardboard over the countertop to protect the surface from scratches and dropped mortar.

- • Countertops fully covered with taped protective paper.
- • Starting tile placement from a far corner without checking if the corner is out of plumb.

Apply and Comb Adhesive
Scoop mastic or thinset onto the wall using the flat side of the trowel to key it into the drywall. Comb over the adhesive using the 1/4-inch notched edge held at a steady 45-degree angle in straight horizontal ridges. Spread only enough adhesive for a 2x3 foot section at a time so it does not skin over.

Press the first tile firmly into the mortar at the center reference point with a slight twisting motion to collapse the ridges. Place spacers along the bottom edge to maintain a 1/8-inch expansion gap above the countertop. Lay subsequent courses in a 50% offset running bond pattern, inserting spacers between vertical and horizontal joints.

- • Spacers consistently positioned at tile corners and bottom counter seam.
- • Tiles sit flat against one another with zero lippage.

Cut and Fit Border and Outlet Tiles
Measure the distance for end-of-row and outlet tiles, subtracting the spacer width for the joint. Score and snap straight cuts using a manual tile cutter, or use a diamond wet saw for L-shaped notch cuts around electrical boxes. Back-butter individual cut pieces with mortar and press them firmly into place.
- • Cut edges sit tight to wall corners and align flush with adjacent factory edges.
- • Outlets are neatly framed with 1/8 to 1/4 inch clearance from the receptacle mounting holes.
- • Cutting tiles too tight to the outlet box, preventing outlet screws from seating properly.

Apply Grout Across Joints
Allow mortar to cure for 24 hours, then pull all tile spacers out of the joints. Hold the rubber grout float at a 45-degree angle and force the mixed grout diagonally into the seams, packing joints completely full. Turn the float to a 90-degree angle and sweep diagonally across the tiles to remove excess grout without digging into the lines.

Wait 15 to 30 minutes until grout feels firm to the touch, then wipe the surface using a damp, well-wrung grout sponge in light circular motions. Rinse the sponge frequently in clean water and finish with a single smooth diagonal pass. Once dry, buff off the remaining white film with a microfiber cloth and seal the bottom counter joint with 100% silicone caulk.
