How to Install a Home Sprinkler System

๐ Step-by-Step Guide (7 Steps)
Mark the Trenches and Head Locations
Walk the yard and spray bright ground-marking paint along the planned pipe routes. Place marking flags where each sprinkler head and the valve box will sit. Ensure head spacing provides head-to-head overlap for uniform water coverage.

Dig the Pipe Trenches
Cut and lift sod rectangles using your shovel and set them aside on a tarp. Dig trenches 8 to 12 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches wide, keeping the bottom flat and free of sharp rocks. Slope the trenches slightly away from the house.

- โข Clean, flat trench bottoms clear of loose stones and tree roots
- โข Digging too shallow, leaving pipes vulnerable to lawn aeration spikes or freeze damage

Build the Valve Manifold and Connect to Supply
Assemble the multi-port valve manifold using threaded fittings wrapped with Teflon tape. Glue or clamp the manifold inlet to the main water supply line downstream of the backflow preventer. Install the valve box over the manifold to keep it accessible.

Lay Lateral Lines and Install Swing Joints
Roll out lateral pipes into the bottom of each trench. Cut the pipe at each sprinkler head location and insert a tee fitting. Connect a flexible swing-pipe assembly to each tee, extending it to the exact spot where the sprinkler head will sit.

Flush the Lateral Lines and Attach Sprinkler Heads
Turn on the water zone by zone without nozzles installed to blast out all dirt and plastic shavings. Once water runs crystal clear, screw the sprinkler heads onto the swing joints and set the top of each canister flush with final soil grade.
- โข Clear water flowing forcefully out of all open pipe ends during the flush
- โข Sprinkler canister caps sitting exactly flush with top of lawn soil
- โข Installing spray nozzles before flushing lines, resulting in immediate internal clogging
- โข Setting sprinkler heads too high above grade where lawnmower blades can hit them
Wire the Valves to the Irrigation Controller
Run multi-conductor irrigation wire along the trenches into the valve box. Connect one wire from each solenoid to the white common wire using grease-filled waterproof nuts, then connect each remaining individual colored wire to a zone terminal. Connect the other wire ends to corresponding terminals on the timer box.

Pressure Test, Adjust Spray, and Backfill Trenches
Run each zone via the controller to inspect for leaks around fittings and adjust nozzle spray arcs. Shovel dirt back into the trenches in 3-inch layers, tamping firmly between each layer. Replace sod slabs on top and water thoroughly to settle.
