How to Install a Sliding Barn Door

๐ Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Locate Studs and Fasten the Header Board
Use a stud finder to locate and mark all wall studs above the doorway opening. Measure door height plus track clearance (usually 2 to 2-1/2 inches above door frame) to establish the header centerline. Hold the pre-painted wood header board level across the opening and drive two 3-inch lag screws into every wall stud along its length.
- โข Header board is completely flush against the drywall and perfectly horizontal on the level bubble.
- โข Lag screw heads are driven snug into marked stud locations across the board.
- โข Fastening the header only into drywall without hitting studs.
- โข Mounting the board too low, causing the door slab to drag on the finished flooring.
Mount the Metal Rail to the Header
Hold the metal track against the mounted header board, using your 4-foot level to ensure dead-level alignment. Insert the track lag bolts through the pre-drilled track holes, slide the cylindrical wall spacers behind the rail, and thread them into the header. Tighten the bolts firmly using a socket wrench.

Attach Roller Hangers to the Door Slab
Lay the door flat on a padded work surface. Measure according to manufacturer instructions (typically 2 inches from the outer edge to the hanger centerline) and mark the mounting hole positions. Drill straight pilot holes through the door slab and fasten the roller straps securely with the provided bolts and nuts.
- โข Both roller hangers stand perfectly plumb and parallel to the door's vertical edges.
- โข Wheel assemblies spin freely without resistance or wobble.
- โข Drilling mounting holes at an angle, causing the hanger straps to sit crooked.

Hang Door and Install Anti-Jump Discs
Rotate the circular anti-jump discs onto the top edge of the door slab toward the front. With a helper, lift the door, tilt it slightly forward, and seat the roller wheels into the top groove of the metal track. Swivel the anti-jump discs outward so they sit directly under the bottom edge of the metal rail to lock the door onto the track.
- โข Wheels are seated inside the track channel and door hangs vertically with uniform floor clearance (approx. 3/8 to 1/2 inch).
- โข Anti-jump discs are positioned directly underneath the metal rail lip.
- โข Forgetting to engage the anti-jump discs, risking door derailment if bumped upwards.
- โข Lifting a heavy solid-core door alone, causing strain or dropping the door.
Install Floor Guide and End Stops
Slide the metal track stops onto each end of the overhead rail, adjust them so the door covers the opening when closed and clears it when open, and tighten the set screws. Plumb the door with your level, position the floor guide at the bottom overlap point so the door stays engaged across its full travel, and screw the guide into the floor.

- โข Door stops hold the door firmly in position at full open and full close without hitting wall trim.
