📋 Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Inspect and Level the Rough Opening
Measure the rough opening width and height to confirm at least 2 inches of width and 2-1/2 inches of height clearance over the door slab. Place a 6-foot level across the bottom floor opening to detect high spots, and check both side studs for plumb. If the floor is out of level, trim the bottom of the jamb on the high side to match.

Attach Installation Brackets or Prep Shims
Fasten metal quick-hang brackets spaced evenly along the outer edge of both side jambs (three per side, aligned near hinges and latch). Alternatively, prepare pairs of wooden shims to slide behind each hinge location. Keep the door plug or shipping clips installed to hold the slab shut inside the frame.

Set Unit and Plumb the Hinge Jamb
Lift the entire pre-hung unit into the rough opening, centering it between drywall faces. Hold a 6-foot level against the inside face of the hinge jamb and adjust it until perfectly plumb in both directions (face and edge). Fasten the top hinge bracket or drive a finish nail through shims behind the top hinge into the framing.

Align Latch Jamb and Dial in the Reveal
Remove the temporary shipping plug and gently close the door to inspect the reveal (gap) around the top and latch side. Adjust the latch-side jamb in or out until the gap along the top header and side jamb is an even 1/8 inch from top to bottom. Secure the latch jamb through brackets or shims into the studs.

Anchor Top Hinge to Framing
Open the door fully to access the top hinge plate. Remove one of the short factory screws from the hinge leaf attached to the jamb (the hole closest to the framing). Drive a 3-inch wood screw through the empty hole, penetrating through the jamb and deep into the wall stud.

- • Hinge plate remains flat without pulling the jamb out of plumb
- • Driving the long screw without shims behind the hinge, causing the jamb to bow backwards
- • Using an oversized screw that sits proud and prevents the hinge leaves from closing flush
Trim Shims and Verify Door Operation
Score protruding wood shims flush with the wall drywall using a sharp utility knife and snap them off cleanly. Swing the door open to 45 and 90 degrees to confirm it stays in place without ghost-swinging open or shut. Close the door gently to verify the latch clicks smoothly into the strike plate without forcing.
