How to Install a New Circuit Breaker
Safely add a dedicated circuit breaker to an electrical service panel, clamp and route new Romex cable, land neutral/ground wires, and snap the breaker into place.

๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Shut Down Main Power and Remove Deadfront
Flip the main service breaker to the OFF position. Use an insulated screwdriver to remove the screws holding the panel deadfront cover, supporting the metal cover with your free hand so it does not fall against internal components.

- โข Panel deadfront cover is set aside, exposing circuit breakers and bus bars.
- โข Letting the heavy steel panel cover slip and strike live service lugs.
- โข Failing to use a headlamp and working in poor lighting.
Verify Absence of Voltage
Hold the tip of a non-contact voltage tester against multiple branch breakers and the target bus stab where the new breaker will go. Confirm the tester gives no light or audio alert on branch circuits, confirming power is killed past the main switch.

Punch Knockout and Install Cable Clamp
Select an unused knockout hole near your breaker location on the panel enclosure wall. Tap the center disc out with a flathead screwdriver and pliers, then insert a 3/8-inch NM clamp connector through the hole and secure it with the locknut inside.
- โข Round metal slug completely removed from the enclosure wall.
- โข Threaded NM clamp seated in the knockout hole with locknut screwed down tightly from the inside.
- โข Knocking out the larger concentric ring by mistake, creating a hole too big for the clamp.
- โข Threading the locknut backwards onto the connector.
Strip, Insert, and Land Ground and Neutral Wires
Strip 8 to 10 inches of outer sheathing from the NM-B cable, slide the cable through the clamp, and tighten the clamp screws until snug. Route the bare copper ground wire to the ground bus bar and the white neutral wire to the neutral bus bar, stripping 1/2 inch of insulation and tightening both terminal screws firmly.
- โข At least 1/4 inch of outer cable sheath extends past the clamp inside the panel.
- โข Bare ground wire and white neutral wire seated under separate screw terminals on their respective bus bars with zero loose copper strands.
- โข Pinching NM clamp screws so tight they crush and short the internal conductors.
- โข Putting both neutral and ground under the exact same bus terminal screw.
Connect Hot Wire and Install Circuit Breaker
Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from the black hot wire, insert it into the terminal lug of the new breaker, and torque the screw down tightly. Hook the mounting clip on the breaker body onto the outer panel rail, then pivot and press the breaker firmly inward until it snaps securely onto the central bus stab.
- โข Black wire fully engaged in breaker lug with no bare copper visible outside the housing.
- โข Breaker body is completely flush and aligned with neighboring circuit breakers on the panel rack.
- โข Failing to catch the rear mounting clip before pressing the breaker onto the bus stab.
- โข Installing a breaker brand not certified/classified for your specific panel brand.
Reinstall Panel Cover and Restore Power
Twist out the matching metal knockout tab on the deadfront cover corresponding to your new breaker slot. Reattach the panel cover with its original machine screws, flip the main breaker to ON, and finally switch the new circuit breaker to ON.
- โข Deadfront cover sits flush against all breaker faces with no open empty gaps.
- โข All panel screws fastened and new breaker handle rests securely in the ON position without tripping.
- โข Using pointed drywall screws instead of blunt machine screws for the panel cover.
- โข Knocking out the wrong slot in the cover, leaving an exposed open shock hazard.
