How to Install a Manual Transfer Switch

๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Mount the Transfer Switch Enclosure
Position the transfer switch enclosure on the wall approximately 12 to 18 inches away from the main breaker panel. Use a torpedo level to ensure the unit is plumb, mark the mounting hole locations, and secure the box into wall studs or masonry anchors. Verify the flexible conduit can reach an available knockout on the main panel without sharp kinks.

- โข Mounting the switch too far from the main panel for the factory conduit whip to reach.
De-energize Panel and Remove Dead Front
Switch the main breaker to the OFF position. Unscrew the panel cover screws while supporting the dead front panel so it does not fall onto exposed breakers. Test all branch circuit breakers and bus bars with a non-contact voltage tester to confirm zero voltage throughout the distribution section.

Route Conduit Whip and Connect Ground/Neutral
Remove a knockout from the bottom or side of the main panel using a hammer and punch. Insert the transfer switch conduit whip connector through the knockout and tighten the locknut firmly with pliers. Route the long white neutral wire to the neutral bus bar and the green ground wire to the grounding bus bar, securing each under a terminal screw.

Splice Critical Circuits to Transfer Switch Leads
Select the critical branch circuit to transfer (e.g., refrigerator or furnace). Disconnect its hot wire from the existing circuit breaker and strip 1/2 inch of insulation. Twist this wire together with the matching black transfer switch lead using a wire nut, then connect the corresponding red transfer switch lead directly into the terminal of the existing breaker.

Wire the Outdoor Generator Inlet Box
Run the dedicated power feed cable from the outdoor generator inlet box to the generator input terminals on the transfer switch. Strip outer jacketing and connect the hot, neutral, and ground conductors to their designated screw terminals on the inlet receptacle and transfer switch input lugs according to color code. Secure cable clamps tightly at both enclosure entry points.

- โข Weatherproof inlet box cover closes fully and creates a tight seal against the exterior wall.

Close Panels and Perform Operational Test
Tuck all spliced wires neatly into panel gutters, replace the dead front cover, and secure all cover screws. Set all transfer switch toggles to LINE mode, turn the main service breaker back ON, and verify household power is restored. Plug in and start the generator outside, flip transfer toggles to GEN mode one at a time, and confirm target circuits power up while monitoring built-in watt meters.
