โš ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings

๐Ÿ“‹ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)

1

Mark the Route and Establish Slope

Mark the drainage path from the waterlogged area to an approved discharge point using landscape marking paint. Drive wooden stakes at both ends, pull a string line tight between them, and use a line level to verify a minimum drop of 1 inch per 10 feet (1% slope).

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข A clear paint line running from the problem area downhill to the discharge point.
  • โ€ข A taut string line anchored to stakes with a verified downward slope toward the outlet.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Failing to maintain a continuous downward slope, creating high spots that trap water.
  • โ€ข Terminating the trench too close to a neighbor's property line or foundation.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Do not dig until utility line flags or paint marks from 811 are visible and verified along the path.
2

Excavate the Trench

Dig the trench 8 to 12 inches wide and 18 to 24 inches deep along your marked line. Use a flat spade or trenching shovel to square the trench sides and bottom, measuring depth relative to your sloped guide string.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข A clean trench with straight vertical sides and a flat, debris-free bottom floor.
  • โ€ข Uniform depth following the guide string from start to discharge point.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Digging a V-shaped trench bottom instead of a flat channel, causing uneven pipe seating.
  • โ€ข Piling excavated dirt right against the trench rim where it falls back inside.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Lift dirt with your legs, not your back; take regular breaks when trenching in hard clay.
3

Line the Trench with Geotextile Fabric

Roll non-woven geotextile drainage fabric along the entire trench, pressing it flush against the floor and both sidewalls. Leave at least 10 to 12 inches of excess fabric draped over the trench edges on each side to wrap over the gravel later.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Fabric closely hugs the bottom and sides of the trench with zero bare dirt exposed.
  • โ€ข Continuous fabric wings draped cleanly over both top edges of the trench.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Using cheap woven weed barrier instead of non-woven geotextile, which clogs quickly with silt.
  • โ€ข Cutting the fabric too narrow, leaving insufficient material to overlap over the top.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Keep the utility knife blade retracted when positioning fabric inside the trench to prevent accidental punctures.
4

Add Base Gravel and Set Perforated Pipe

Shovel a 2- to 3-inch base layer of washed 3/4-inch gravel onto the fabric at the trench bottom. Lay the 4-inch perforated drain pipe directly on this gravel bed, ensuring the drainage holes face downward toward the bottom.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Pipe resting centered on a flat gravel bed along the entire trench length.
  • โ€ข Pipe perforations oriented facing downward at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Placing pipe holes facing upward, which forces water to rise 4 inches before entering the pipe.
  • โ€ข Laying pipe directly onto bare dirt or directly onto fabric without a gravel cushion.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Wear safety glasses when dumping crushed stone to prevent flying gravel chips from hitting your eyes.
5

Backfill with Gravel and Enclose Fabric

Fill the trench with washed gravel over the top and sides of the pipe until gravel reaches 3 to 4 inches below the top soil surface. Fold the draped fabric flaps over the gravel bed, overlapping them by at least 6 to 12 inches to form a fully enclosed gravel burrito.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Gravel completely covers the pipe to a uniform height just below lawn grade.
  • โ€ข Fabric flaps tightly folded over the top gravel, fully sealing it from outside soil.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Allowing dirt to mix into the gravel bed before the fabric wrap is closed.
  • โ€ข Underfilling gravel, leaving excessive headspace that will cause lawn sinking later.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Do not overload the wheelbarrow with gravel; make lighter trips to prevent tip-overs and strain.
6

Cover Surface and Install Discharge Outlet

Attach a pop-up drainage emitter or grated end cap to the pipe exit point at daylight. Fill the remaining top 3 to 4 inches of the trench with topsoil or sod over the wrapped fabric, then tamp the surface gently flush with the surrounding lawn.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Emitter cap installed flush with lawn grade at the downhill discharge exit.
  • โ€ข Trench surface backfilled and tamped level with surrounding grass or garden bed.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Leaving the open end of the pipe uncapped, inviting rodents and debris to clog the line.
  • โ€ข Over-compacting wet clay soil over the fabric, crushing the pipe below.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Ensure the discharge outlet drains safely onto permeable ground, not over public sidewalks where it could create slip hazards.
