How to Install a Drop Ceiling

Establish Ceiling Height and Grid Layout
Measure down at least 3 to 4 inches below the lowest overhead obstruction like ducts or pipes. Project a continuous horizontal line around the entire perimeter using a laser level. Calculate the room dimensions to ensure perimeter border tiles on opposing walls will be equal width and wider than half a tile.

Mount the Perimeter Wall Angle
Position the top leg of the L-shaped wall molding flush against your marked level line. Fasten the molding into wall studs every 16 to 24 inches using 1-1/4 inch drywall screws or masonry fasteners. Overlap inside corners and miter outside 90-degree corners with aviation snips.

Install Fasteners and Suspension Wires
Drive eyelet lag screws into overhead ceiling joists along the layout lines for your main runners every 4 feet. Cut lengths of 12-gauge suspension wire to length, feed them through each eyelet, and wrap the wire securely around itself with at least 3 tight twists. Pull straight down on every wire to remove slack and kinks.

Measure border openings individually, score the face of border tiles with a sharp utility knife using a straightedge, and snap the tile core cleanly downward before slicing the backing paper. Place border panels around the perimeter to complete the ceiling.
