๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Measure and Cut Top and Bottom Plates
Measure the total length of your target wall space with a tape measure. Mark and cut two straight 2x4 boards to this exact dimension using a circular saw or miter saw. Place the two cut boards side-by-side to verify they match in length perfectly.

- โข Square 90-degree end cuts on both ends of both boards.
- โข Cutting boards separately without clamping or checking matching lengths.
- โข Using bowed or twisted 2x4 stock for plates.
Mark 16-Inch On-Center Stud Layout
Clamp or hold the top and bottom plates edge-to-edge with their ends perfectly flush. Hook your tape measure on the end and mark layout lines every 16 inches. Draw a square line across both plates at each mark using a speed square, and place an 'X' to the right of each line to indicate stud placement.

Cut Studs to Uniform Length
Calculate stud length by subtracting the combined thickness of the top and bottom plates (3 inches total) from your overall wall height. Measure and cut all common studs to this exact uniform length using a stop block setup or precise square cuts.

Lay Out Frame Assembly on Floor
Separate the top and bottom plates, laying them on edge across the floor with marked layout lines facing inward. Place cut studs between the plates, orienting every stud on edge with its side aligned to the layout line and covering the 'X'. Ensure any natural curve (crown) in the studs points upward.

Nail Plates to Studs
Starting from one end, hold the plate firmly against the stud end so edges are flush with the layout line. Drive two 16d nails straight through the outside face of the plate into the end grain of each stud. Repeat across the bottom plate, then move to the top plate.

Square the Assembled Wall Frame
Measure diagonally across the assembled frame from the top-left outside corner to the bottom-right outside corner, then measure the opposite diagonal. If the measurements differ, lightly tap the longer corner with a hammer until both diagonal measurements match within 1/16 inch. Nail a temporary 2x4 diagonal brace across the frame to lock it square.
