๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Measure and Snap Layout Lines
Measure the distance from the adjacent reference wall at both ends of the intended wall run to ensure parallel alignment. Snap a crisp chalk line across the floor between these marks. Plumb up from this floor line using a 4-foot level or plumb bob to establish and mark the matching top plate line on the ceiling joists.

Cut Plates and Mark 16-Inch On-Center Spacing
Cut two 2x4s to the exact overall length of the wall to serve as the bottom sole plate and top plate. Place the two plates side-by-side with their edges flush and clamp or hold them together. Pull your tape measure from the lead edge, mark at 15-1/4 inches, and then mark every 16 inches thereafter, drawing a line across both plates with a speed square and placing an 'X' to the right of each line to indicate stud placement.

Sight Lumber Crowns and Cut Studs
Inspect each 2x4 stud by sighting down its narrow edge to locate the 'crown' (the slight upward arch along the edge). Mark the crown edge with an arrow on each piece so they can all face the same direction during assembly. Measure the floor-to-ceiling height at three points, subtract 3 inches (for the combined thickness of the top and bottom plates), and cut all studs to this uniform length.

Assemble and Nail the Wall on the Floor
Lay the top and bottom plates on edge on the floor, spaced apart by the length of the studs. Position each stud on edge between the plates aligned with your layout lines, ensuring all crown arrows point toward the top edge of the wall. Drive two 16d framing nails through the outside face of the top and bottom plates directly into the end grain of each stud.

Square and Temporarily Brace the Frame
Measure diagonally from opposite corner to opposite corner of the assembled frame. Adjust the frame until both diagonal measurements match exactly, confirming the rectangle is true and square. Nail a long 1x4 diagonally across the studs from the top plate to the bottom plate to lock the wall square while it is raised.

Raise, Plumb, and Anchor the Wall
Tip the wall up into position along the floor chalk line with a helper. Check the wall for plumb at both ends using a 4-foot level, tapping the bottom or top into alignment as needed. Fasten the bottom plate through the subfloor into floor joists with 16d nails or 3-inch screws every 16 inches, and secure the top plate into the overhead ceiling joists.
