Remove the Plastic Diffuser Globe

Grip the base of the unplugged LED bulb firmly in one hand and twist or rock the plastic dome diffuser with the other. If it is glued tight, gently run the edge of a flathead screwdriver or utility knife around the seam where the globe meets the plastic housing to cut the factory adhesive. Pop the dome off to expose the aluminum LED circuit board inside.

Identify the Failed LED Chip

Examine the yellow square surface-mount LED chips arrayed around the board under good lighting. Look for a diode that has a distinct black dot, dark scorching, or burnt discoloration in its center, indicating a blown element. If no burn marks are visible, set a multimeter to diode test mode and probe each LED pad to find the chip that fails to glow.

Remove the Damaged LED Diode

Use precision tweezers or the tip of a flathead screwdriver to pry and scrape the burnt yellow phosphor square completely off the circuit board. Scrape away the plastic housing of the dead LED until you expose the two silver metallic solder pads underneath. Clean away any debris and carbon residue using a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol.

Place the iron tip across both exposed metal pads simultaneously, then feed in a small amount of rosin-core solder to create a smooth, rounded solder bridge connecting the positive and negative contacts. Remove the iron smoothly and allow the joint to solidify undisturbed for 10 seconds.

Test and Reseal the Bulb

Screw the open bulb into a standard table lamp plugged into a surge protector, switch it on briefly to verify the remaining LEDs illuminate, and immediately switch it off. Run a thin bead of silicone adhesive or RTV sealant around the lip of the plastic base housing. Press the diffuser dome firmly back onto the base and let the adhesive cure for at least one hour before returning the bulb to permanent service.
