📋 Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Diagnose the Rubbing Contact and Gap Reveal
Close the door slowly until it meets resistance, watching the gap (reveal) between the door edge and frame. Check if the top latch corner is hitting the jamb or if the bottom latch edge is dragging on the sill. A wide gap at the top hinge side and a tight gap at the top latch side confirms a sagging top hinge.
- • Chalk or pencil marks clearly identify the exact contact points on the jamb or door edge.
- • Visual inspection confirms whether the gap is uneven along the top or strike side.
- • Assuming the door needs trimming before checking hinge alignment.
Tighten Screws and Repair Stripped Holes
Hand-tighten all screws on the top and bottom hinge leaves using a manual screwdriver. If any screw spins freely without biting, back it out, coat 2-3 wooden toothpicks in wood glue, jam them deep into the hole, snap them flush, and drive the screw back in.
- • All hinge screw heads sit completely flush inside their countersunk hinge holes.
- • No hinge leaves shift or wiggle when the door is moved.
- • Using a high-torque impact driver that strips out the soft pine jamb.
Drive a 3-Inch Anchor Screw into the Top Hinge
Remove one of the short center screws from the jamb side of the top hinge. Replace it with a 3-inch #9 wood screw driven through the jamb and deep into the structural 2x4 wall stud behind it. Tighten slowly until you see the top hinge leaf draw back tight toward the framing.
- • The 3-inch screw head is fully seated flush in the top hinge leaf.
- • The gap between the door and the top jamb widens slightly as the door lifts.
- • Over-driving the screw and bowing the door jamb out of square.
Adjust Hinge Knuckles with an Adjustable Wrench
If the door still sags, open it wide and remove the top hinge pin using a nail set and hammer from below. Slide an adjustable wrench vertically over the individual hinge knuckles attached to the jamb and gently bend them toward the hinge jamb by 1/16 inch. Reinstall the pin and test the swing.
- • Jamb knuckles align straight with door knuckles when the pin is dropped back into place.
- • The door swings smoothly without binding against the strike jamb.
- • Bending the knuckles outward instead of inward, which worsens the door sag.
Shim the Bottom Hinge to Lift the Latch Side
Loosen the jamb screws on the bottom hinge leaf by three full turns, leaving them loosely in place. Slide a thin cardboard or plastic hinge shim behind the jamb-side leaf, then tighten all screws down firmly. This kicks the bottom of the door away from the jamb and raises the sagging top-latch corner.
- • The shim is neatly concealed behind the bottom hinge leaf with no edges protruding.
- • The reveal across the entire top and latch side of the door is uniform (roughly 1/8 inch).
- • Using a shim that is too thick, causing the door to bind on the bottom hinge side when closing.
