How to Clean a Dryer Vent Duct

📋 Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Disconnect Dryer and Move Away from Wall
Unplug the dryer electrical cord from the wall outlet. If using a gas dryer, turn the shutoff valve perpendicular to the pipe. Gently slide the dryer 1 to 2 feet away from the wall to access the rear exhaust connection without kinking any rigid piping.

Disconnect the Transition Duct
Loosen the clamp securing the flexible duct to the dryer exhaust outlet using a screwdriver or nut driver. Slide the duct collar off the dryer exhaust port, then repeat the process at the wall pipe collar. Peel away any old, brittle duct tape.

Vacuum the Dryer Exhaust Port and Transition Duct
Insert the crevice tool of your shop vacuum directly into the back outlet of the dryer. Vacuum out accumulated lint deep inside the blower housing. Then run the vacuum hose straight through the disconnected flexible transition duct to clean out loose debris.

Assemble Brush Kit and Drill-Clean the Wall Duct
Thread the round brush head onto the first flexible rod and attach the drill adapter to your cordless drill. Insert the brush into the wall duct opening, set the drill to rotate clockwise at low speed, and push forward. Add rod extensions one by one while keeping the drill spinning continuously clockwise until the brush reaches the exterior vent hood.

- • Switching drill to reverse, which unscrews rod segments inside the wall

Extract Brush and Clean Wall Opening
Slowly pull the rods back out of the wall duct while maintaining continuous forward drill rotation. Place the shop vacuum hose directly underneath the pipe entrance to catch falling lint clumps as the brush exits. Vacuum the floor and interior duct lip thoroughly.

Reconnect Ductwork and Test Airflow
Slide the transition duct back over the dryer exhaust and wall inlet pipe. Tighten all mechanical worm-drive clamps securely with a nut driver, then seal every seam with HVAC foil tape. Plug in the dryer, start a test cycle on fluff/no-heat, and feel strong airflow exiting the outdoor vent hood.
