Dry-fit a ring of retaining wall blocks on the lawn to establish the exact diameter. Mark the outer perimeter using spray paint roughly 3 to 4 inches wider than the stone circle, then remove the stones.

Excavate the Trench and Pit

Dig out the marked circle to a uniform depth of 7 to 8 inches. Keep the outer trench walls vertical and scoop out all loose sod, roots, and organic matter.
