How to Build an Earthen Cob Oven

Lay the Firebrick Hearth Floor
Pour a 1-inch layer of dry sand onto your sturdy, pre-built plinth and level it completely. Arrange firebricks tightly together without mortar in a herringbone or staggered seam pattern inside your target dome perimeter. Tap the bricks with a rubber mallet until the entire hearth surface is flat and smooth with no raised edges.

Construct the Moist Sand Form
Dump damp sand onto the center of the brick hearth and shape it into a rounded hemisphere dome. Target an interior dome height that is precisely 63% to 70% of the interior diameter. Cover the finished sand dome with a single layer of wet newspaper sheets to create a distinct release barrier.

Mix the Dense Thermal Cob Layer
Combine 1 part clay subsoil with roughly 2 to 3 parts sharp sand on a heavy tarp. Add small amounts of water and stomp the mixture barefoot or with work boots, rolling the tarp to fold the material into a cohesive mass. Stop adding water when a rolled ball of cob holds its shape without sticking excessively to hands or slumping when dropped from waist height.

Blend the joints completely with your thumbs and a trowel until the shell is seamless. While the cob is leather-hard, mark an arched door opening whose height is exactly 63% of the total interior dome height, then cut and remove the plug using a knife.

Allow the thermal layer to firm up for 24-48 hours, then gently scoop all sand and newspaper out through the doorway with your hands and a small scoop. Mix a second batch of cob containing 50% clay-sand slip and 50% chopped straw, then pack a 3-to-4-inch layer over the entire outer thermal dome. Smooth the outer surface with wet hands or a trowel to seal the straw fibers.
