📋 Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Set and Level the Foundation Skids
Position two or three pressure-treated 4x4 skids parallel on your leveled gravel pad or concrete deck blocks. Use a 4-foot spirit level across and along the skids, shimming or adjusting the gravel until both timbers sit fully flat and level.
- • Skids sit parallel and equidistant from end to end.
- • Bubble on the spirit level rests dead-center along the top and across adjacent skids.
- • Leaving one skid resting on high dirt spots causing rocking or bowing.
Mark Rim Joist Layout
Pair two rim joists side by side with flush ends. Pull a tape measure from one end and mark joist locations every 16 inches on center, drawing a line with a speed square and placing an 'X' on the side where the joist will sit.
- • Pencil lines on both rim joists align perfectly side by side.
- • Clear 'X' marks indicate which side of the line the joist faces.
- • Measuring 16 inches between joists rather than 16 inches on center (from edge to center).
Assemble Floor Frame Perimeter and Joists
Position the two rim joists and two outer end joists into a rectangle on top of the skids. Fasten the intermediate floor joists along the layout marks using three 3-inch exterior structural screws or 16D nails through the rim joist into each joist end.
- • Top edges of all interior joists sit completely flush with the top edge of the rim joists.
- • Three fasteners driven squarely into each joist end.
- • Fastening joists with top edges raised or dipped below the rim joist profile.
Square and Anchor the Floor Frame
Hook a tape measure on opposite diagonal corners of the outer frame and record the measurement. Measure the opposite diagonal, shift the frame until both diagonal measurements match exactly, then fasten the perimeter frame to the foundation skids with structural screws or hurricane ties.

- • Screws or metal ties secure the joist box rigidly to the underlying 4x4 skids.
- • Anchoring to skids before verifying diagonal squareness.
Glue and Fasten Subfloor Panels
Run a continuous bead of heavy-duty subfloor construction adhesive along the top edges of all joists for the first panel. Lay 3/4-inch plywood flush with the frame edges, leave a 1/8-inch expansion gap at sheet joints, and fasten with screws every 6 inches along edges and every 12 inches along interior joists.
- • First panel sits perfectly flush with the outer corner and edges of the frame.
- • Screw heads are countersunk just below the surface without tearing through the top wood veneer.
- • Adhesive squeeze-out is visible along the joist seams.
- • Skipping construction adhesive, which leads to squeaking and loose flooring over time.
- • Butting plywood panels tightly together with no room for thermal expansion.
