โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Call 811 to mark underground utility lines before digging any soil.
- โข Wear heavy work gloves and steel-toe work boots when handling heavy pavers and base rock.
- โข Wear safety glasses and an N95 respirator mask when spreading polymeric sand or cutting pavers.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Layout and Excavate the Patio Area
Drive stakes past your perimeter and string mason lines to define the patio boundaries, adding 6 inches of clearance on all sides. Dig out soil to a uniform depth of 7 inches (allowing 4 inches for base, 1 inch for sand, and 2 inches for pavers). Pitch the excavation slope down 1/4 inch per linear foot away from any adjacent building foundation.
- โข A squared trench dug 7 inches deep with flat, cleared soil
- โข Perimeter string lines set with a clear 6-inch gravel over-dig boundary
- โข Digging too shallow and leaving pavers higher than adjacent sod or walkways
- โข Sloping the excavation toward a house foundation instead of away from it
Install and Compact the Gravel Base
Spread crushed gravel base material across the excavated area in a 2-inch layer. Lightly dampen the gravel with a garden hose mist, then run the plate compactor or hand tamper thoroughly over the entire surface. Add a second 2-inch layer and repeat dampening and compaction until you achieve a dense, solid 4-inch base.
- โข A flat, rock-hard stone surface that does not yield when stepped on
- โข Gravel layer sitting exactly 3 inches below final intended patio grade
- โข Adding 4 inches of gravel all at once without compacting in 2-inch lifts
- โข Soaking the gravel into mud rather than lightly dampening it
Screed the Bedding Sand Layer
Place two 1-inch conduit pipes parallel to each other on top of the compacted base, roughly 5 feet apart. Shovel coarse concrete sand between the pipes until it slightly overflows the pipe height. Rest your 2x4 screed board across both pipes and pull it toward you in a smooth sawing motion to create a dead-flat 1-inch sand bed.
- โข A perfectly smooth, untrodden 1-inch sand plane between the screed rails
- โข Pipe tracks filled in and smoothed out with a hand trowel after pipe removal
- โข Walking on or stepping in freshly screeded sand
- โข Using fine play sand or masonry sand instead of coarse, angular concrete sand
Lay Pavers in Pattern
Start in a 90-degree corner or against a permanent edge, placing pavers directly on top of the screeded sand. Drop each paver straight down tightly against adjacent stones using a 'click-and-drop' method rather than sliding them across the sand. Periodically lay a 4-foot level across the tops and tap down high stones with a rubber mallet.
- โข Uniform, tight joints with clean pattern lines extending outward
- โข Level resting flat across multiple pavers without rocking or gaps underneath
- โข Sliding pavers across the sand, which pushes up sand ridges and ruins the bed
- โข Failing to check squareness against the initial layout string line
Install Edge Restraints
Expose the gravel base immediately alongside the outer paver perimeter by scraping away loose excess sand. Press rigid plastic paver edging firmly against the outside paver faces. Hammer 10-inch steel spikes through the edging holes into the compacted gravel base every 12 inches to lock the patio border.
- โข Plastic edging sitting tight and flush against paver sides resting on base gravel
- โข Steel spikes driven fully flush through every second or third edging slot
- โข Setting edge restraints on top of loose sand instead of down on the compacted gravel
- โข Spacing spikes too far apart, causing the perimeter pavers to spread apart over time
Sweep and Activate Polymeric Sand
Ensure the patio paver surface is 100% dry, then pour polymeric sand across the stones. Use a push broom to sweep sand diagonally into all joint gaps until filled to 1/8 inch below the paver bevel. Set your garden hose nozzle to a gentle shower spray and mist the patio in sections for 30 seconds each, rinsing off top residue while soaking the joint sand to trigger the binder.
- โข Joints completely filled with sand up to 1/8 inch below the stone chamfer edge
- โข Paver top surfaces completely clean of sand residue while joints appear uniformly wet
- โข Applying polymeric sand onto damp pavers, creating permanent white haze stains
- โข Using a high-pressure jet stream that blasts sand out of the joints during watering

Don’t have everything?
- No Plate compactor? Heavy steel hand tamper (work in thinner 1.5-inch lifts)
- No 1-inch conduit screed pipes? 1-inch outer diameter PVC pipe or 1-inch square metal tubing
