๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Form and Pour Reinforced Footings
Set level wood footing forms directly on undisturbed soil using a rotary laser level to ensure identical elevation across the entire perimeter. Suspend two continuous runs of #4 rebar on plastic chairs at least 3 inches above the dirt base. Pour concrete, vibrate to eliminate voids, and press a 2x4 into the center top to create a continuous interlocking keyway.

Erect and Pour Foundation Walls
Assemble modular concrete forms or lay structural CMU blocks directly centered over the footing keyway. Tie vertical rebar dowels extending from the footings to horizontal rebar runs inside the wall cavity. Pour wall concrete in continuous 4-foot lifts, consolidating each lift with a pencil vibrator without touching the form faces.

Apply Waterproofing and Drainage Board
Coat the cured exterior wall surfaces with heavy rubberized asphalt emulsion from the grade line down over the footing joint. Hang dimpled drainage board with dimples facing the wall to create a vapor gap and hydrostatic relief channel. Fasten the top edge with termination bars and secure seams with specialized vapor tape.

Install Perimeter Drain Tile and Stone Bed
Lay 4-inch perforated pipe holes-down beside the footing atop a 2-inch bed of washed crushed stone. Slope the pipe continuously at minimum 1/8-inch per foot toward the daylight exit or interior sump basin. Cover the pipe with 12 to 18 inches of washed #57 stone and wrap the entire stone envelope in non-woven geotextile filter fabric.

Prepare Sub-Base and Pour Interior Slab
Level 4 inches of compact crushed stone across the basement floor, then lay 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier with 12-inch overlapped, taped seams. Support welded wire mesh or rebar grid on 2-inch chairs over the plastic. Pour ready-mix concrete, screed to elevation, consolidate, bull float, and apply a smooth steel trowel finish once bleed water evaporates.

- โข Zero visible tears in the poly sheeting prior to and during the pour
- โข Mirror-like, dense troweled finish free of honeycomb craters or ridgelines
- โข Troweling concrete while bleed water is still on the surface, which causes delamination

Backfill in Compacted Lifts
Brace the basement walls or install first-floor framing before pushing dirt back against foundation walls. Backfill the exterior trench using free-draining granular soil in 8 to 12-inch horizontal layers. Run a plate compactor over each individual layer until reaching final exterior grade sloped 6 inches away from the house.
- โข Soil backfill visibly layered and flat-tamped without large voids
- โข Exterior soil grade sloping noticeably away from foundation at a 5 percent fall
- โข Basement walls remaining dead plumb with no inward movement
- โข Backfilling before first-floor joists are framed or walls are braced internally
- โข Dumping large boulders or clay clumps against the delicate dimpled drainage board
