📋 Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Build the Toe-Kick Base Platform
Construct a rigid rectangular 2x4 base frame matching the combined footprint of the two cabinets. Assemble the frame with pocket screws or 3-inch wood screws at every corner and internal cross-brace. Level the base platform completely on the floor using shims where necessary.

Join and Secure Base Cabinets
Place the two stock cabinets back-to-back or side-by-side on the 2x4 base frame. Clamp the cabinet face frames flush with bar clamps and drill countersunk pilot holes through the stile edges. Fasten the cabinets together with 2-1/2 inch cabinet screws, then drive screws down through the bottom into the 2x4 base.

Frame the Seating Overhang and Sides
Build an extended 2x4 structural framework off the back of the cabinets if adding a bar-stool overhang. Fasten vertical studs and horizontal top rails using pocket screws to support the countertop cantilever. Ensure all framing aligns flush with the outer cabinet carcass edges.

Apply Decorative Skin and Corner Trim
Cut 1/4-inch beadboard or plywood skin panels to cover the exposed cabinet backs and framing. Secure the skin panels using wood glue and 1-inch brad nails spaced every 6 inches. Install 1x4 pine corner trim and base moulding to conceal all raw edges and seam joints.

Cut and Sand the Butcher Block Slab
Measure the island perimeter and add desired overhangs (typically 1.5 inches on work sides, 10-12 inches on seating side). Mark straight cut lines on the butcher block using painter's tape to prevent grain tear-out. Cut cleanly with a circular saw guided by a clamped straightedge, then ease all edges with 120-grit and 220-grit sandpaper.

- • All top edges softly rounded to eliminate sharp corners.
- • Cutting without a guide rail, resulting in a wavy cut edge across solid hardwood.
Mount Countertop and Apply Protective Finish
Position the butcher block centered on the island base with even overhangs. Fasten from underneath through cabinet corner blocks using screws with washers inside oversized or slotted holes to permit natural wood expansion. Apply three coats of food-safe finish or polyurethane across all faces and exposed edges.
